Uganda deploys more peacekeepers in volatile Somalia
Posted: 3/24/2009 7:56:00 PM
Shabelle: SOMALIA SOMALIA
KAMPALA (Sh. M. Network) -- Uganda has deployed another battalion of soldiers in volatile Somalia bringing the total number of its soldiers there to over 2,000, a top military commander here has said.
Gen. Aronda Nyakairima, Chief of Defense Forces of Uganda People's Defense Force (UPDF) told reporters on Tuesday that the battalion left for Somalia on Sunday to beef up the already 1,700 Ugandan peacekeepers deployed in the capital Mogadishu.
"With the new president, parliament, reinforcement of AMISOM, we hope to begin seeing faster reconciliation in Somalia," he said.
The troops are deployed under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
The new deployment in the Horn of African country comes two weeks after the Somali President Sheikh Sharif Sheik Ahmed visited Uganda and Burundi seeking for more help.
Crispus Kiyonga, Uganda's minister of defense told parliament early this year that Burundi would also be sending another battalion to Somalia to beef up its other battalion already deployed there.
He said that the Somali Transitional Federal Government (TFG) and the opposition Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia had agreed to raise another 10,000 troops internally, to pacify the war-torn country.
Nyakairima said in January that once the troops are on the ground, two battalions, one battalion from Uganda or Burundi together with another from the local joint force would be deployed in Baidoa to protect parliament.
The over 3,500 peacekeepers now deployed in Somalia are far below the 8,000 African Union peacekeepers required to help pacify the lawless country.
The Ethiopians troops who helped the TFG topple an Islamist administration in late 2006 withdrew early this year, creating an urgent need to deploy more peacekeepers.
Somalia has lacked a strong government since the ouster of military strongman Siad Barre in 1991. (Xinhua)

What is wrong with him? Did he and the scholars not agree on two things:
1) Shariah law
2) senting bantus to home, and not bringing any reforcement.
It looks like sh.sharif broke 1 of the agreements.

We never saw things eye to eye, and I support Amiir Al-muminiin. Now who's hypocrite? He's not from the cursed tree, and I still support him

Re: amir al mumineen is annoying me
This is what politics is all about. Making promises to get support and then breaking those promises. Sharif knows that he cannot survive without the foreign forces and at the same time he wants the support of the people. I guess the foreign forces decided that they weren't pleased with how he was running things and decided to send forces no matter what. The government is either cheating and betraying the Muslims or is a puppet government with no real power or both. I have been reading articles on the issue and the thing that gets to me is the arrogance of the AMISOM and their people. They have been rejected by not only the Mujahideen, but also the "Culama", and the tribal leaders, adn the public and members of the government, and yet they still go on with their business paying no attention to all of those opinions.
"As we speak we are deploying a battalion from Uganda that brings the total strength of AMISOM to 50 percent, for the first time we are above 4,000 so this is quite an achievement ... This is already symbolically very important despite the terrorist acts directed against AMISOM," he said. "The agenda of the day is to strengthen AMISOM not the other way around."
Lamamra expressed annoyance at news reports that Somali President Sheik Sharif Ahmed is under pressure to order the AMISOM troops home. Speaking on the sidelines of an AU consultative meeting on Somalia, the commissioner said such information is motivated by either ignorance or bad faith.
"Those statements are basically prompted either by genuine ignorance of what the AMISOM role is or by some pre-judged hostile position toward every friendly force that is likely to be there to make sure that Somalia is actually coming out of its crisis and moving forward to reconstitute its government institutions," he said. "So I would not be worried by the statements either way."
The Muslims of the land you are invaded have protested against your presence and all you have to say is, "So I would not be worried by the statements either way."

One famous dabadhilif is ignored but doesnt understand that
Qaldaanboy, everyone knows he went to uganda and other places to receive military and financial support. But we will wait what he have to say about this because he cant just hide himself from journalists and reer muqdisho when he arrives at the airporka Aadan cadde. Whatever he says ofcourse will not be a reason to rebel against him. He still has my support.

If the Man's just as dependent on foreign help as AY what makes Him any different? The whole reason He was elected was because people thought He would be able to rally Somalis and not need any foreign troops. I feel like the Guy tricked a lot of people.

i will wait what sh.sharif have to say about this when he arrives at the airporka however his travel and the new fresh amisom troops tells us that he too has the same view as qaldanboy Omar. The sheikh will be seen as deceiver by the scholars and the mogadishusians because there was a day when amiir agreed to everything(shariahlaw, amisom leaving after 120 days) the ulama & elders asked from him. This wont do him any good.
You know what would be interesting? If amisom left somalia today. To see how alxaaram and other khawarij groups behave after they leave. Will they try to take xamar by force and if that happends how would the scholars, elders, UIC & indha'cadde's group, government and mogadishu society react to that.
