On Tuesday, a 93-year-old Japanese man named Tsutomu Yamaguchi became the first person to ever become certified as a survivor of both atomic bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.

Yamaguchi was on a business trip in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, when the first atomic bomb was dropped. He suffered serious burns to the upper half of his body but was able to return to his hometown, Nagasaki, the next day. And on August 9, 1945, Yamaguchi was caught in the second bombing.

He had already been a certified radiation survivor, “hibakusha,” from the Nagasaki bombing, but has now also been confirmed of surviving the previous attack three days earlier on Hiroshima.

Yamaguchi is the first survivor of both bombings that officials know of, but they believe it is possible that there could be others like him. He was one of about 260,000 people to survive the attacks. In the end, about 210,000 were killed from both bombings, and Yamaguchi is one of the lucky few that was not only able to cheat death once, but twice
