DARK SIDE OF DUBAI:trees are fake, smiles are fake & water

Post by Camel_herder »

i've come across an article that talks about Dubai, it has shown be the truely dark side of Dubai, which is hell.
I've been to dubai in 2006 and thought it to be the most beautiful and dreamy kind of place, but i just thought about all the innocent workers and people that it shattered their dreams. i did see alot of those indian/pakistani workers dressed in blue, working outside in the extereme heat, while i was driving around my rental car, going from mall to mall, and grapping a fanta or a bottle of water every hour. i really didn't think about their condition to be bad, but now i realized how really downthroden and sad they looked.

walaahi it's sad, and it's even happenig to some of our people, specially Ethiopians. I know somali's will never work for foreigners as maids, at least i hope they will never stoop to that level, but anything is possible nowadays since it's very chaotic in somalia, and people have gone mad forgeting about their pride and dignity.

anyways before i write an essay let me introduce you to this article which is a shocker:

1) a nice Ethiopian servant girl is the latest fashionable accessory (wow - can you believe such odacity and bracen insults??)
it continues:

"Everyone, it seems, has a maid. The maids used to be predominantly Filipino, but with the recession, Filipinos have been judged to be too expensive, so a nice Ethiopian servant girl is the latest fashionable accessory"

"It is an open secret that once you hire a maid, you have absolute power over her. You take her passport – everyone does; you decide when to pay her, and when – if ever – she can take a break; and you decide who she talks to. She speaks no Arabic. She cannot escape"

2) the filipino girl says: (Gotta admit, this filipino girl is really smart and hit the nail on the head)

I ask the Filipino girl behind the counter if she likes it here. "It's OK," she says cautiously. Really? I say. I can't stand it. She sighs with relief and says: "This is the most terrible place! I hate it! I was here for months before I realised – everything in Dubai is fake. Everything you see. The trees are fake, the workers' contracts are fake, the islands are fake, the smiles are fake – even the water is fake!" But she is trapped, she says. She got into debt to come here, and she is stuck for three years: an old story now. "I think Dubai is like an oasis. It is an illusion, not real. You think you have seen water in the distance, but you get close and you only get a mouthful of sand."

As she says this, another customer enters. She forces her face into the broad, empty Dubai smile and says: "And how may I help you tonight, sir?"

what made me really stop and think was when this poor girl said:

"I think Dubai is like an oasis. It is an illusion, not real. You think you have seen water in the distance, but you get close and you only get a mouthful of sand."

truely sad:
