Horta let me start out saying, they are both quite embarrassing to say the least, but the Islamic Courts Union went over the top, because when they could not find anything else to use to gain political might and popularity they turn to Islam for their answer. As Islam is the best way to gain great Political Power in a nation full of Muslims and without guidence. When they emerged in 2006, I even fall for awhile for this great scheme. But one justed needed to look up the Key founders of ICU and leading heads underneath all of the great propaganda of that year. Hassan Dhir Aweys was the head of the 90-member shura council of the Islamic Courts Union of Somalia, and the real force behind it's creation. Today, as with time reveals the hidden dirt of the past, an organization created to counter another political force that would soon rain down on Mogadishu and much of Southern Somalia, TFG aka A/Y iyo Puntland. ICU =Power hungry individuals who came together, not to preach Islam or to better it's population but rather become the politcal might of what their clan chiefs consider tribal territories. The Scheme? To use Somaliweyn to reach the objective, and from that point on become the sole power of the Country.
The unit as a whole ICU failed in their scheme, but could have easily succeeded and became an actual Political power that would help run a nation, if greed and power didn't get in the way. They succeeded in fooling a good unmber of the Somali population for their self interest cause the country to expedite further into political turmoil we continue to see today.

Somaliland is classic, it consists of a triangle that is a tribal entity in Northwest Somalia. They are part of the Clan Politics of Somalia. They have put themselves in isolation mode from the rest of Somalia by declaring independence in 1991. The sole purpose behind the idea, was not to get an actual independence, as the real politicans of that day and todays understand the world will only accept one Somalia, but to bring attention to their clan and stand as a political unit. In a Somalia that brought to clear light its political heavy weights and contenders, after the overthrow of Siyad Barre, this tiny and unknow clan went on a journey to become a top dog and let the world know Somalia is more than Darood VS Hawiye as written all over International newspapers and media outlines across the world in the 90s. They wanted to have a turn to play on the National Level and bring their existance to light.
I am pretty sure they would have settled for 4th political heavy weight after Eelay who were in thrid than if only the National leaders of the 90s put their differences aside and agree on a National conprehensive Government. The failure of those who held the key to Somalia to agree led to Somaliland to stay on it's course of Isolation and overtime built it's politcal name and power to only fail and be traped in actually trying to now getting recognition as a Clan Country in NorthWest Somalia.
The scheme of Somaliland is they wanted to use Secessionism as a tool for National Political seat of either Prime Minister or President and change the Hawiye Darood politics of Somalia. They have failed in that aspect but gain themselves thrid place rather than 4th place like they were in te 90s. They are not happy about that and now push harder than ever for a Clan State that won't materialize even after the off springs of Somalia_Boqors kids reach 10 million.
ps: If only they realized that their politics isn't working and come out of their self imposed trap of Secessionism and purse helping their country Somalia solve the National problems and contribute to the peace efforts in our beloved Captial Mogadishu, this little clan would have gotten the respect they yawn for and real Political Power on the National Level.
