The United States on Thursday voiced its deep concern on security situation in Somalia, urging Eritrea to "cease immediately" its alleged support for anti-government forces in Somalia.

"The United States urges the Government of the State of Eritrea to stop fanning the flames of violence in Somalia," State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said in a statement.

Reports here said at least 120 people have been killed, some 400 others wounded since last Thursday in the conflict between the hard-line group of al-Shabaab and Somalia's government forces.

The Somali government accused Eritrea of supporting al-Shabaab, which is described by Washington as a terrorist organization with close ties to al-Qaeda, to destabilize Mogadishu's democracy. But the accusation has been denied by the Eritrean government.

"Eritrea has been instrumental in facilitating support of the extremists," said Kelly, adding that Eritrea's support for anti-government forces is a "serious obstacle to the possibility of a more normal relationship with the United States."

"This support must cease immediately," he said.

"The United States calls on all parties to the conflict in Mogadishu to implement an immediate ceasefire and permit humanitarian assistance to be delivered safely," said the spokesman.
