On May 22,2009 I started this blog with an entry about the most recent torture scandal(s) involving innocent men,women and children in illegally occupied Iraq,along with the very guilty American parties who conducted the torture.After speaking with a few colleagues and students at a local University I noticed the same ignorant remarks being made in terms of who is to blame and who is just ‘doing their job’.Those to blame would be George Bush,Cheney and anyone else who knew of,endorsed or promoted the torture being done.Individuals who,according to those I spoke to,should not be blamed are the soldiers at Guantanamo prison who were just following the orders given to them.I disagree completely.Every human being has a right to refuse to comply with orders by another individual no matter the order given and no matter the race,religion or creed of the individuals involved on either side.Sure,there may be consequences for refusing an order but sometimes your moral obligations outweigh these consequences by a long run.Let me try something else,instead of bouncing around with a moral issue let’s be a bit more layman.Joseph starved his dog,Rex.Starving a dog is wrong.Joseph beat his dog,Rex.Beating a dog is wrong.Joseph tortured his dog,Rex,to death.Torturing a dog is wrong.Joseph was taken to court and served 5 years for the torture of a domestic animal.Joseph’s defense was that the dog,Rex,was a nuisance who continually dug up his garden,disturbed the peace with incessant barking and bit him during one occasion.There was no evidence to corroborate Joseph’s story. Now let us try this another way.Colonel Mark starved an inmate named Muhammad.Starving a human being is wrong.Colonel Mark beat an inmate named Muhammad.Beating a human being is wrong.Colonel Mark tortured an inmate named Muhammad to death.Torturing a human being is wrong.Colonel Mark was never taken to court,nor did he serve any jail time. When asked publicly about the situation Colonel Mark stated that Mr.Muhammad was a terrorist who hated America and was a budding suicide bomber.There was no evidence to corroborate Colonel Mark’s story.To some having to picture a dog being starved,kicked around,raped,smothered in fecal matter and then killed is too horrifying.But then picturing a human being going through the same events is just another day in America wherein it’s us vs. the terrorists,and we always win.
