'Obama gives deadline to Israel for Palestine'

US President Barack Obama gives Israel a two-year deadline for the finalization of a two-state solution amid sharply opposing positions in Washington and Tel Aviv over the issue of Palestinian statehood.

President Obama raised the issue of an independent Palestinian state with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the Israeli official's visit to Washington last month, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

According to the report, the plan envisions a Middle East peace deal by 2011.

Haaretz quoted a source in Cairo as telling the London-based A-Sharq al-Awsat that Israel's Netanyahu is expected to respond to the proposal within six weeks.

President Obama, who was in Egypt last week to address the Arab and Muslim world, discussed his proposed plan with Egyptian intelligence chief Omer Suleiman and Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit.

The US president has urged the Netanyahu government to set up a Palestinian state and has been "very clear about the need to stop building settlements, to stop building outposts" on occupied Palestinian territories.

Snubbing international calls to halt its settlement expansion, Israel seems adamant to stubbornly pursue the activities.

Israeli Interior Minister Eli Yishai declared on Sunday that he would use all resources in the Interior Ministry, "its branches and its influences over local government" to expand Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Israeli premier, for his part, has halted all Israeli-Palestinian negotiations aimed at the creation of an independent Palestine and has called previous US-backed agreements into question.

In April, Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman sparked controversy by saying that Tel Aviv is not bound by the 2007 US-sponsored Annapolis deal, under which Israel agreed to the creation of a Palestinian state.

As long as the $7 million in aid per day flow nothing will change.

Aabe Bush was the only US President to cut some aid off to the Israelis in 1991 after they refused to talk to the Palestinians.

Lol @ Israel defying the U.S who has them on life support. Pretty soon Israel will not be seen as that perfect Judea-Christian ally in the Mohammedan Middle East but a child gone renegade and nothing irks a parent more than a disobediant child. I wonder what the Israeli lobby will do when the U.S and Israel lock heads.

The head of the Senate Foreign Relations committee Senator John Kerry reiterated Hillary and Obama's position by saying
Senator John Kerry, Democrat of Massachusetts, fell in behind Mr. Obama on the settlement issue, much as he did last month when the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, was in Washington and got an earful from lawmakers on Capitol Hill that the United States was serious about a freeze on settlement construction.

Mr. Kerry urged Palestinians to crack down on terrorism, and called for Arab countries to reach out to Israel. He added: “Israel must take difficult steps as well, and as a friend of Israel, the United States must speak with unity on their importance. I agree with President Obama that Israel’s settlement activity undermines efforts to achieve peace, and that these settlements must stop.”

It won't happen, the North has the votes and power to object it.

And Southern Sudan would be screwed if they were independent... they'd have to pay Kenya an enormous amount to use Mombasa as they'd be landlocked...no way its happening.

AW, thats true... b/c South Sudan is going through a process overseen by the international community and a recognized and functioning government in Khartoum.

ok?..what does it being landlocked have to do with anything?..do you think the Khartoum government lets them use port of Sudan? They are currently using Tanzanian and Kenyan ports anyway, And Khartoum cannot do anything but protest against this succession.

FAH,

Which should have been the path :sland: should have taken in 1991. :sland: could have become the temporary seat of government while the Mogadishu stabilized. If that effort failed after 10 years, :sland: could make a case that the South is ungovernable and thus seek independence or remain status quo, the seat of government while pocketing the government coffers and enjoying the balance of power in their favor.

This was a strategy advocated by several former members of the SNM who were against independence
