the French President Nicolas Sarkozy has spoken out strongly against the wearing of the burka by Muslim women in France. :x

In a major policy speech he said the burka - a garment covering women from head to toe - reduced them to servitude and undermined their dignity.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/8115083.stm

this is old news i know, but im kinda pissed of how he said that covering women from head to toe - reduced them to servitude and undermined their dignity!! is this another way of attacking our religion yet again??

walahi we need strong muslim leaders in Europe, esp. in cuountries like France.

do you think the British gvernment would/could come up with such non-sense?

But these responses put a smile on my face....

What a joke of an article. Reading all the comments it seems that muslims are being taught their religion by non-muslims.

After reading this article I am even more greatful that my Lord (and yours too for that matter) has ordered me to cover myself fully. So what if I dont want to display my beauty and adornment to the world, I can still integrate..I can still converese and go about my daily activities. What on earth difference does it make to ANYONE? Yeah I don't like seeing flesh hanging out all over the place on a hot summers day, but I still mind my own business. Is that what your women call freedom? Freedom for their bits and bobs maybe but nothing more than oppression.

You people need to realise that it is not the menfolk telling us to do this, it is our faith, our belief and submission in God. It is a beautiful feeling that I will not change for ANYONE of ANYTHING.

Thank you to those non-muslims talking sense below who realise the stupidity of this article.

I was born in England to white british christian parents. I converted to islam in my 40's and now cover myself completely when I go out. I am not married and therefore the oppression theory is lost. The burqa is not mentioned in qur'an but we are told to cover, be modest and not display our bodies. The wives of the prophet muhammad (saws) were told to cover themselves completely in mixed company. As a practicing muslim I would follow the qur'an and also sunnah (way of life) of the prophet muhammad and as a woman ~ his wives. In the privacy of our own homes and under our outer clothes we can wear the latest fashions, if we choose ~ contrary to Ms Khan's views.
We are not oppressed or repressed, rather we were given rights long before the christian woman was. Oppression is a not an islamic way but cultural evil!
Our young girls are encouraged to wear the hijab ~ I don't think there's any proof that doing so damages their brains! We have muslim women doctors as proof of that

Hi Everyone - Im a muslim who wears the hijab!! so i must be oppressed? well my mum doesnt wear it and neither does my sister!!ok well that must mean im uneducated??actually i have a degree with honors!!so do i not want to "fit in" with British society??actually im a consultant and work in a male dominated industry...i dont tend to work with many women because i work with top level management and they are generally men (so where are all the non hijab wearing western women and why dont they hold these positions)!! Anyway what does being british mean exactly?i have a british sense of humour, know blackadder quotes and love Primani bargains like everyone else an I pay my taxes (by the way i think its daylight robbery) but i dont go out and get drunk and shack up with a guy with a pulse, i dont disrespect my parents and i dont dress like im working on a street corner,oh and i moan about the weather. basically i love the uk BECOZ i have the freedom to choose, so Why does me wearing a cloth scare you?

NO.

I'd like to see hijaabs banned in primary schools though. 3 and 4 yr olds wearing hijaab is just so wrong.
