Re: Islam's legacy for Somalia/Somali people since it began
I hate to be the one, but it is probably going to have to be me to point this out: religiious division.
The refugees from the wars of sucession following the death of the Prophet who arrived in Mogadisho carried with them a version of Islam at great variance from that which arose later in the Nejd (the Wahaabbi Bidca) which influenced Sayidka and his branch of the qadiriyya in the North. The Southern branch fluorished with Omani-Persian-Iraqi influences, culminating with the Cult of the Saints under Shaykh Aweys al Baraawi and the Banadir Ulama.
This and qabiil are still the basic dichotomies in Somali philosophical thought.

Sayidka got it first, c. 1880s. He traveled to the Nejd and got it firsthand from the Wahaabbi family. Funny. I always thought the stuff that reached Mog directly after the Prophet's death was the real deal.

Well, Somalis are Muslim through and through. It has blended with our culture and helped shape our beautiful culture.
Islam is not opposed to indigenous culture. It only rectifies the negative aspect of our culture and that is why Islam is at home from Malaysia to Morocco and there are distinct cultures there.
