'KAT' SHOPS AT THE SPERM BANK !!!!!

There was a time that feminists railed against the "objectification of women." Now, what exactly that meant they never made clear. I mean, in a sense, we are objects. Don't believe me? Go to the nearest bridge and step off. Yep, you're an object alright. Gravity accelerates you just as it would a rock or a coffee table.

I used to wonder: if I were driving my car and a feminist walked out in front of me, would she want me to apply the brakes or just keep driving. After all, if I applied the brakes, I'd be thinking of her as an object. I never figured that one out.

But they were talking about sex, or at least sometimes they were. They were complaining about being the object of men's sexual desires. What did they want us to be attracted to? Most of us aren't gay and almost none of us partake in the more exotic forms of sexual expression that don't involve women.

Apparently no one ever explained to them that being the object of someone's sexual desire isn't such a bad thing as long as that's not all you are. But those were feminists like Andrea Dworkin and Catherine MacKinnon, so they weren't listening anyway. They had their story and were stickin' to it.

So now comes this piece about a woman, "Kat," for whom no man she actually knew was good enough to be the father of her child. Just look at what she had to deal with; at least one actually had a nervous tic. Needless to say, she couldn't even consider a man like that, so she went shopping for one. Not a real flesh and blood one, mind you, just his sperm at a sperm bank.

Read about her decision-making process here (Doublex, 8/5/09). Handsome? Check. Tall? Check. Blue or green eyes? Check. Math or science, not art? Check. Acceptable voice? An absolute necessity.

A few had grammatical errors in their profiles. Ooh, ick. Of course "Kat" has a few in her piece too, but that's OK. It's the father of her baby who has to be word perfect.

And so it goes. Objectification? She could've been buying a car.

Now it may be said that, when you go to a sperm bank, objectification is all you can do. You can't really get to know the person intimately, given that they're not present. To which I say "exactly." Sperm banks are all about objectification.

If the Doublex blog is any evidence, I guess that's OK now. Do I understand that correctly? Sexual objectification is now acceptable? Hmm, I'm not sure about that one. Procreative objectification? Maybe. Objectification by women of men but not vice versa?

There, I think I understand.

Thanks to Lisa for the heads-up.
