Arabic language in Puntland / أرض البنط

Post by Amethyst »

Many signs and a ton of official documents seem to be in it. Its also heavily taught in the schools, So.....How much do you really need to know to get by ? :|

The signs also have Af-Somali or Af-Ingriis so you don't need to know ANY arabic to get by in Puntland.
I think ..

Gemini: Everything seems Tri-lingual, eh?....lol...Yeah, but I meant more in professional circles and settings tho. I keep coming across these press releases, and all kinds of offical things, making it seem as if English really isnt the second language at all...and that Arabic is. Which is prolly true....as many Puntlanders trade with Carabaha and prolly use it as their form of Business-language or something.

Emp5: I think the same is true for anywhere in Somalia, actually. It must go back to the time we adapted to writing or something , or even before that through religion. It looks really easy to read, but reading it has never been the problem...waxa waa fahamkeeda, and these ton of arabic words poppin up outta nowhere or something. lol

H nothing is wrng with arabic, you know i love arabic, but its just that i dont want somali people to want to learn these other languages besides somali because they are more spoken. like if we have signs in arabic/english and say the somalis in Europe and Americas when/if they return home they wont learn our language because they have one they understand better. if you get what i mean, esp. with young children.

English is the second language of Puntland, by far more people 'speak' this than Arabic.

I can attest to this.

My estimation:

99% speak Somali

33% speak English (many speak it very poorly though)

15% speak Arabic (funny fact, on a very high level the ones that do, kind of Yemenish)

5% speak Italian (the old folks that went to school in Xamar)
