Here in Minneapolis, today as we celebrate Eid with our families and friends, a Somali mother is in tears and in pain for the loss of her only son. He was 19. He came for a hair cut to get ready for the Eid festivities. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it. His life was cut short by a bullet probably from another Somali teenager. Just a week ago, a Somali family buried their 20 year old son, a third year college student, who was shot in front of community center where he was volunteering to tutor and mentor younger kids. Three months before that, in the same place of the community center, slain was a 31-year-old youth mentor and basketball coach. Two months before that, [an]18-year-old high school graduate was killed in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood. These brothers were killed by other brothers in what now can be only termed as an all-blown-out senseless gang violence within the Somali community.

That`s the thing, they never flush each other out, they take out the good brothers, the one`s who are actually doing something good for themselvs and the community it`s allways been like that with somalis, even in Somalia they always kill the intellectuals

Same depressing story in the UK. Sometimes I wish these Somali gang members could be put on a plane back to Mogadishu to see what real horrific war looks like.

I may be wrong but I think few things contribute to the reason why Somali kid/men join in gangs.

1. Bad neighborhood. Most of the Somalis are low income people and they live in a low income housing..Even those that live in section 8 (another low inome vouchers)who have the choice to live better places chose to live in gettos so they can save some money.

2. Parents are not envolved in their kid's day to day activity. They just send them to school..That is it..dads are doing their "fadhi ku dirir" in the coffee places and moms are either too much overwhelmed with work and housework or they are also those type that busy on "Helyaao maxay xalay gashanayd iyo shaloongo and building houses back home:

3. Fake divorce.

4. Kids are neglected when it comes to feeding and clothing, their money are used for Hagbad aka shaloongo or some moms buying gold to brag for other moms.

5. 70% of parents did not speak the language and didn't even know that still it is ok to be involved and have an interpreter.

6. Some of the boys were already Mooryaan, Jirri aka Dhuljiif or dayday when they were brought to West..

Oh, really? Bassabuur Somalis in the UK are killing themselves off, miya? I think not. Them fighting others is different to internal fights which happens a lot in North America.

One of the boys my family knows his mum, I don't believe he was of either clan, but he was killed all the same. I believe he was the one who was providing mentor services for the community.

All those killings in MPLS took place in one summer but that shit is a daily occurrence in the poor neighborhood somalis in the UK live in. ON top of these gang wannabe teenagers, even your old men throw each other of buildings after mixing khat with vodka.

We don't all live in poor neighbourhoods, nor do we see fighting of any kind in all of our neighbourhoods. As for Khat & Vodaka I have personally seen drunk somali guys, and they did look like they just came out of the mafrash after a night of chewing. loool at old men throwing each other? Kambuli thanks for the breakdown, but too many excuses. Also one brother i know who is a teacher in London told me that the young somali males fail in their studies from an early age and rather than studying harder they become accustom to failing and often leave school with no qualifications. Growing up in a hood is no excuse.
