I'm thinking of doing my thesis on Somali culture (rural) and maybe more) I'm not sure exactly. I have my family and friends as resources but I was hoping to get your help as well. The kind of things I'm going to be looking for is anecdotal , folktales, history and such. I don't have any specific questions right now but I was hoping if there are any people out there who would be willing to help me out.

your brother,

Achilles
See you really don't know anything about the somali culture. What would we get in return for helping you? WE only help if there is something in it for us Very Happy

I think the civil war aftermath of kids switching from Bollywood romantic Indian movies to Hollywood violent, graphic American movies introduced some taboo issues, such as porn, suicide, stress, gangs and drugs.
There is also a new culture called "distance marriages" where the guy is in USA and the girl is in Uk and their marriage happens in south Africa--and they never see each other.
What the phuck is that --why don't they marry people in their own cities.
Well, it's not that I don't know anything about Somali culture per se, its just that I grew up in the West and unfortunately do not know as much as I should. This project is way for me to teach other people about Somali culture and an opportunity to learn a little myself.

Ofcourse I will give you something in return: you will receive my deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude in addition to my sincere thanks. I hope thats enough Very Happy

So if anyone can help me out, I really would appreciate it.

The most signifacant thing that changed about Somali culture in this technology era is that Hassan Adan Samatar albums went from tapes to CDs infront of our own eyes. Laughing

u can quote me on that in your essay --its interesting --the teacher will laugh at how H. A samatar envolved all this years.

Well broh, u can discuss things like Somalia culture origin, dressing, food in Somalia tradition also ur observation can include ways of how Somali ppl follow the Islamic principles *prayers, Ramadan* and obviously their traditional greetings. Circumcision *gudiinta*> bit awkward 2 state but so relevant 2 ur research. Laughing

*family life* which relates 2 *extending family members by marrying 4 wives and such a things, and clans. Education and how is based on religion issues *dugsii* including when the British and Italy introduced primary and secondary education system during colonial period, and how the instruction was in Arabic, English and Italian languages.... Cool

I hope these informations which I stated above helps u out 2 gather ur final piece of proposal... Very Happy

Achilles,

There are a lot of good books out there, on somali culture. For example,

"Sociolist Somalia" By Ahmed I. Samatar.
"the somali Challenge" by same author as above, this one has chapters on somali culture, but the rest is on the Economi and politics.

"modern History of somalia" by I.M. Lewis
"Somalia: From statelessness to statelessness?" By Maria H. Brons.

Hope those help.
