Witness appeal after racist attack

COPS are hunting a gang of Asian youths who meted out a savage beating on four black men in a racist attack in Whitechapel.

The attack started in Fieldgate Street at the back of the East London Mosque around 11pm last Tuesday when the four victims returned to their car to find that it had been broken into.

On seeing another car being broken into further down the street, the men challenged a group of young Asian men who shouted racial abuse at them before chasing them and beating them.

The men were set upon by a large group of youths aged around 18 who chased them from Fieldgate Street, into Whitechapel Road and Greatorex Street and punched and kicked them before stamping on their heads and faces.

All four men needed hospital treatment but are now recovering at home.

Det Sgt Craig Robinson said: "Prayers at the mosque had just finished when the attack happened and Whitechapel Road is a very busy thoroughfare so someone must have seen something."

He said staff at the mosque had been very helpful and that there was no indication that the youths were connected with the mosque.
