In 2008 US elections when Presidential candidate John McCain understood that the numbers were against him, he went back to his hardcore base for support. The base, as they called it, is the last resort of any politician. The base's support is unquestionable and unequivocal, they would support their leaders even if he asks them to jump off a cliff - they all would.
In Somaliland politics, Kulmiye's base are 26ka June and East Burco. In the last 6 months Kulmiye has been shrinking to that base and now the only place they would organise an event or two is none other than in either 26ka June or East Burco. The funny thing is, that base is even shrinking. The UDUB party is making huge inroads in that area. Just a week ago about 150 youths from a youth organisation which operates in 26ka June joined UDUB youth wing. This comes after a number of prominent Central Committee of Kulmiye's leadership revolted over the past couple of months including Cismaan Hindi (formerly head of Kulmiye's Hargeisa region) and Muj. Cali Gurey (formerly a central committee member of Kulmiye).
This downward spiral of Kulmiye's support base actually started from 2005 elections where they lost huge grounds to UCID party. In 2009, that shrinking base will continue and this time UDUB is making the damage.
