Computer experts or anyone know how to reboot my laptop to factory settings? I just got a new dell laptop but want to reboot my old Viao back to factory settings in order to improve performance and give to a cousin. Its an XP laptop and i no longer have the old systems cd's, is it possible to reboot without these cd's or can you buy them? I have backed up all files, photos etc onto external hard drive.

If it has a recovery partition, then yes. Usually, you press a button once you see the Vaio logo. It could be Esc, F1, F2, F8, F11, etc. At Vaio's site, Support section, you could get a pdf copy of the manual.

To be honest most computer related problems are easy to solve, no point paying someone to do something that isnt that hard. Tech guys at pc world will probably take 50 quid just to check the laptop before even fixing it.

I recommend you put Linux Mint on it and give Windows the boot

Like Arabman said u'll need recovery disk. I remember u said ur system was about four yrs old, back then they used to come with a recovery disk or a restore disk. If u have one of those just boot the system with it. If not then u'll need a windows cd and u'll need to format it and reinstall windows.

there is no such thing as factory settings in computers.

Formating the hard disk and re-installing windows is the most you can do for a fresh install

windows 7 is brilliant, not following the hype but i've had it 1 day and seems decent so far.

Yeah the laptop i tryna reboot came with the disc but i have lost it. How do i format it? and then would i just install the windows cd?

I mean just return to settings as bought. how would i format the hard disk?
