ONLF recaptured seven towns

Ethnic Ogaden fighters in Ethiopia have launched an offensive in the southeastern Somali region and claim to have recaptured seven towns from government forces.

In a statement released early on Saturday, the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) said its attacks were launched across a broad front and had begun on November 10.

"The operation involved thousands of ONLF troops and resulted in two days of heavy fighting. A significant number of Ethiopian troops have been killed and their military hardware captured or destroyed," it said.

The ONLF said its forces entered the towns of Obolka, Hamaro, Higlaaley, Yucub, Galadiid, Boodhaano and Gunogabo - where government forces had deployed troops and positioned military hardware.

"ONLF forces were warmly welcomed by the population in these areas and are administering medical care to those civilians killed by retreating Ethiopian occupation forces," the statement claimed.

The Ethiopian government has not responded to the statement.

Formed in 1984, the ONLF is fighting for the independence of ethnic Somalis in Ethiopia's oil-rich Ogaden region - which they say has been marginalised by the government in Addis Ababa.

The Ethiopian military launched a counter-offensive against ONLF rebels after they attacked a Chinese-run oil venture in Ogaden in April 2007, killing 74 people.

In April, Ethiopia said it had significantly weakened the the anti-government force, a claim ONLF rejects.

Interesting development. ONLF needs to be cautious, though. This could play into TPLF hands, Ethiopia is in a terrible state right now. It wouldn't surprise me if Meles' used increased ONLF activity as a diversion which would only result in a repeat of the Rape of Jigjiga.

As much as it pains me, that's what I see happening.

VIVA ONLF. This is great news.

Yes, Nomad. Ethiopia is in a terrible state right now and its not going to get better at times soon. The famine is worsening and ethnic and religious tensions are on boiling point now. America can no longer fund Ethiopia as they use to do, to the financial crisis.

Ethiopia will never collapse, you people are getting high your own supply. Meaning your starting to believe your own hype as reality. If you think Ethiopia is like somalia and if one can collapsed so can the other, your dead wrong. We somalis are savages when it comes to warfare which is why our enemies are scared of us, but we cant differentiate friend from foe.

If the Soviet Union could collapse so can Ethiopia.

I really don’t want Ethiopia to collapse since it will just cause more trouble for East Africa. However, I do want to see Ogaden given his liberation

Forget famine, famine won't stop a hundred Ethiopian tanks razing Ogadenia to the ground at Meles behest. TPLF coffers aren't even close to empty, the famine has not affected military expenditure, merely the common people. Mesfin said as much himself.

Either way, Woyane will benefit from this. They will use this issue as a diversion or they will do nothing (believe it or not, Ethiopia's disintegration is not something Tigray are opposed to).

I'm not sure where you're going with America, Ethiopia's military defense budget has maintained. They're not reliant on the US (not that their relationship isn't as strong as it could ever be) for 1% of their GDP.

General, you don't know what you're talking about  Don't embarrass yourself.

Meles has been on the offensive since the 2007 raid. What was the result his troops we're cut down in the countryside, so they retreated razing village's and towns and returned to base's on the outskirts of major centre's. Now they have been followed to those centre's, ONLF is penetrating deep into babile which isnt even technically aprt of the somali region but its strategic and Harar. So Meles is in retreat he cannot defeat the ONLF. We will see this escalate defintely, ONLF will take more Settlements and the fighting will be at its worst.

The rebellion is countrywide and his troops are still facing eritrea on the border..this man is a mess..RIP

Meles doesn't want or need to defeat the ONLF. Their views are very compatible with the TPLF manifesto.

If Meles wanted the ONLF finished, they'd be finished, but for now they have mutual objectives.

Its not like you have many options, you have two. Fight or die. Funny thing is the end result will always be the same, if you fight you die, if you dont fight you die. But at least with one you die with your pride.

I will put money Ethiopia will be around for another hundred years as it is, if not having expanded.
