Sanaag, 20 November 2009 - As part of the endeavors being made to expand the coverage of telephone service nationwide, about 70% of the self-declared autonomous state’s total area has received mobile phone service, according to Mr. Guled Abdikadir Hassan, development manager of mobile phone service Somali Telecom Group.

Indicating that the mobile phone service expansion was launched 2 years ago, he explained that in the first year, the main service was confined to 2 cities as putting in place the necessary infrastructure facilities was time-consuming. After 2008, however, cell phone service was expanded to all the regions, and that the number of beneficiaries has risen to 227,500, he added.

Noting that in 2007-2008, 85% of the customers were from Erigabo, Mr. Hassan pointed out that at present 62% of the customers are from the administrative capital and 38% living in remote areas as a result of the expansion of infrastructure facilities in the domain.

He went on to say that the mobile phone service installation project would continue until every square meter of Somali soil gets access to such service, besides providing reliable one through tackling busy traffic network.

Following price reduction in the subscription and installment of mobile phone line, the number of new customers has grown double-fold, reports added.
Say masha'allah :up:

Actually, I'm reading about Maakhir right now (avoiding work :roll: ), it sounds interesting. I did not know this;
Maakhir is the only Somali territory a foreign flag had never been hoisted while the rest of Somalia’s fast regions were cut into small pieces by other foreign powers.
Intresting.

Sanaag is a remote eastern region of Somaliland :lol: , which bordered by approximately 380 kilometres of Red Sea coastline to the north and locates the border between Somaliland and eastern regions of Somalia.

The region is divided into three districts: Erigavo, Badhan and Ceel AF weyne (El Afweyne), with the towns of Erigavo as the regional capital and Badhan and El Afweyne as the district capitals.

In terms of development, both the former central governments of Somalia and current Somaliland government and by International agencies and other NGOs, the region of Sanaag has been almost totally neglected. There are no surfaced roads in the region and services of almost any type are non-existent in the towns and the villages.

Sanaag region lacks an adequate transport, communication and infrastructures, leading to a chronic lack of public services, particularly the important areas such as:

•Health services

•Education

•Agriculture

•Water supply

The potential for agricultural developments has been largely unexploited and much work is needed in the livestock sector to improve herds and reduce environmental degradation.

The mountainous nature of the region, the poor state of roads and communications and general difficulty in transporting supplies into the region indicate that any development project should proceed gradually and that adequate time should be allowed for implementation.
