Do any of the ancient families still exist in Xamar?

Post by James Dahl »

I've been fascinated recently about the history of Xamar itself, it is actually one of the oldest cities in Africa, dating back several thousand years. Are there families still living there from the more ancient eras though?

In ancient times the first people to settle in Xamar were the "Shirazi" dynasties, which were branches of the Bazrangi royal family from Persia and Oman. These were the same people who build the Zenj civilization of Kilwa Kisiwani and Zanzibar as well as the city states of Malindi, Mombasa etc.
Himyarites from Yemen, the three septs of whom are Banu Zaid Al-Jamhur, Banu Quda'a and Banu Sakasic, were the next people to settle there, and it was they who built Shingani.
Various Adnani Arabs settled in Xamar Weyne and eventually unified Xamar Weyne and Shingani into a single city state under Fakr ad-Din.

Now I know there are lots of the last group still around, but are there any Himyar or Shirazi families still around in Xamar?

Yeah their rememnants are disperesed in the peoples we call Shaanshi, reer Xamar, Benadiri, Shiiqaal Gendershe, etc.

Somalis are weird in that they are the only Black Africans to incorporate the minorities without the minorities having a high class distinction of presiding over the majority. In Kenya the Swahili lord over the Blacks, all of Africa is the same except somalia.
