For many African countries the discovery of diamonds has turned into a curse, with blood or conflict diamonds fuelling exploitation, subversion and division. But in Botswana, its a different story.
The diamond has transformed Botswana from one of the poorest countries in the world, to one of the most prosperous and stable countries in Africa. An inspiring initiative has seen Botswanas vast diamond reserves, worth about three billion US dollars a year, being used to share wealth throughout the nation. Trade Consultant Ntetleng Masisi says they used diamonds to bring about health facilities, education and a markedly improved quality of life, Masisi says that the partnership is a necessity, The earnings from our exports of diamonds have really done a lot for us. But Botswanas reliance on diamond revenue means that the whole of the countrys future is now in the hands of the diamond dealers
If Somalis had even 1/10th the intelligence or drive of these Botswana Bantu Somalia wouldn't be the worst country in the world.

With medications, you can live a relatively normal life with those diseases. Unlike in Somalia where violence will either kill you, or cause you to languish in an utanga refugee camp.

40% of the pop is going to die of aids....i dont care about meds...and how many of these ppl are getting anti-retro drugs?
and the thought of nearly 1 in 2 ppl u meet have hiv/aids is scary
i rather live in mogadsihu aids free than in botswana with hiv..thank you very much

You could live in Bostwana aids free too. So long as you practice safe sex this isn't a problem that effects you. You cannot get aids simply by meeting people.

Population of less than 2 million and produces 1/4 of the worlds diamonds. 90% of of the countries are exports are diamonds.

1. probaly on their way to south africa
2. magic johnson has access to the best doctors in the world and cant be compared to some poor african

AIDS might be rampant in Botswana but there is progress in their effort to tackle the disease. Botswana has succesfully implemented the Kimberley Process and their country boasts one of the few democracies in Africa. We can't compare Botswana and Somalia, it is ridiculous to even think about it.

even with all of this..the disparity in incomes is large and only a few people benefit from botswana's revenue from diamonds...not to mention a lot of that goes back to pay of debts to the world bank and IMF

Botswana will be smart when the finally link sex and the spreading of aids together, until the they are just another dumb african country. They are smarter than somalis, Ill give you that though.

That might be true, but the fact is their economy is growing at a faster rate than any other African country. This simply means the government can improve other sectors creating more employment opportunies for it's citizens. Minus the AIDS, I bet life is better in Botswana.

what part of "50% of the pop lives below the poverty line" dont you get?
if half the pop lives on less than $1.25 a day and 40% of the pop has aids...how exactly does that make Botswana the smartest country in africa?
