UN stops food aid to 1 million in southern Somalia

GENEVA, Switzerland (AP) -The U.N. food agency says it is stopping aid distribution to about 1 million people in southern Somalia because of attacks against staff and "unacceptable" demands by armed groups.

The World Food Program says up to 95 of those areas are controlled by the al-Shabab Islamist group. The U.S. State Department says the group has links to al-Qaeda.

The WFP spokeswoman Emilia Casella says armed groups demanded WFP remove women from all posts and pay protection money to guarantee the aid workers' security.

Casella said Tuesday that people who were receiving aid from WFP until now "face a situation that is particularly dire."

Well now the shop keepers can import better quality food for selling...I had the rice once and almost choked on white stones...their saliid macsaro was also subpar. Shabaab have done the shacab a public service.

We weren't food sufficient under a dowlad and without one we will? Cajiib. People are going to starve in my home town for sure.

colonial profiteering agencies should slowly be kicked of somalia.

The delusion of the Al Kalab & their fans reminds me of Marie Antoinette's infamous quote, "Let them eat cake" during one of the famines that occurred in France during the reign of her husband Louis XVI. Upon being alerted that the people were suffering due to widespread bread shortages, the Queen is said to have replied, "Then let them eat brioche.

It isn't even necessary. I don't know about other regions, but Sanaag is well-irrigated and the sea is made use of in a practical manner rather than acting as a dumping ground for bodies, hence the words 'food aid' evoking confusion, because Sanaagians have never had any use for it. If Eritrea which is more arid than Somalia (South in particular)is able to feed it's population without charity, Somalia can too.

yeah they should start farming and producing food..the shabaab even asked the U.N to buy all the food they give away from the local farmers..so everybody can win..but the U.N refused and I think thats why al-shabaab kicked them out..

A positive move. The first step to self-sustenance is being weeded off of dependency.
