If You Were Offered......
Youre dream job, dream salary, and dream location...but you had serious moral issues with the people you were working for, would you still take the job?
E.g Youve got a degree in travel and tourism and a lodge chain offer you a 50k starting salary + benefits etc, in your favourite location with sea views or whatever youre into...but the catch is that thanks to a corrupt government theyve bought land that traditionally belonged to a group of hunter gatherers/fisherman etc. and have ruined their way of life.
What if they offered them in return schools and housing elsewhere...would you refuse still?

Why they are civilizing them. Why would you refuse?
I really dislike the mambo jumbo about not changing people from their "old ways" but you are doing them a disservice by not forcing them to change and you are even getting paid for them.
Would the Chinese nation as it is today without CHairman Mao and his forced cultural revolution?
Take it sister. I have no sympathy for old ways and anything to do with "traditionalism". It might have a sob story now but the next generation of educated and self-sufficient people makes it all worthwhile.

Re: If You Were Offered......
Would you take off hijaab for that? Thats just encroaching on the personal and not what I want to discuss tonight. Basra...would you?
Voltage...but its not that clear cut is it? Ive always been under the impression that traditional ways of life can teach us a lot about the modern world. If they were allowed the same space for progression as the 'developed' world, wouldnt it be exciting to see what different ideas they can come up with? Ones that could perhaps change our perception of change and development? (I know, could perhaps but hey!) And do you not think that it creates a trauma for people to be lynched out of their way of life and forced into a dominant one through no choice of their own? Do you not think that they will have to live with resentment and/or low self esteem for many generations as a cause of that? Will they ever magically become "civilised" just because someone planted into their vision of civilisation?
Khalid...interesting...youre quite direct lol
Mad May...how do you think that connects with Chinas recent boom?

Re: If You Were Offered......
Most of Mao's domestic policies were an absolute disaster, the Cultural Revolution hindered modernization dramatically. The only way it can be linked to China's recent boom is how the chaos it wrought damaged the Communist Party enough so that Deng was able to restructure China's political and economic system without resistance

Re: If You Were Offered......
Thats my point, if you leave a people to test and try different measures, they will come up with their own forms of governance and development. Look at Africa, how many countries can say they have created their own fate? Atleast Chinese history is as Chinese as possible, and it will continue to morph unlike stunted Africa.

Re: If You Were Offered......
Mao's 'testing' where he looked for a Chinese route to development in the Great Leap Forward starved over 9 million people, sometimes testing aint good!!

Its history. All governments have seemingly good ideas eff up, but its how a country picks itself up and moves on, recreating itself that creates a base for a functioning future. I dont support what he did, however the process is fascinating no? Politics shouldnt be about emotions, that is for weak governments, strong governments work on initiative and solutions.
Sanbololshe, not everyone thinks like that, many people work by burying their morals in their new found existence. Many people choose to work against their morals because the more 'concrete' offerings fit into their lives and goals a lot easier.

The moral issue here for me as I understand it would be leaving people homeless... if they have a roof over there head, bread and what not I'm going to have agree with Voltage here
What ever 'damage' was done is done...no reason you can't profit from it and if your losing sleep over it- hook a sista up
