His personality traits aren't important, what matters more is that his work is laughable.

The best way to know whether a historian is worth his salt is to see whether they cite Burton when expounding on one of the many topics he wrote poorly about. It's the scholarly equivalent of a litmus test.

You will find the occasional truth in the works of Simpson, et al but I wouldn't recommend anything personally unless you are casually looking to further your knowledge of Somalia affairs and are not to bothered about being fed mistruths.

What Somalia needs/needed is a comprehensive historical narrative which is objective and capable of standing up to scrutiny, none are available currently.
