Somali MPs 'cannot hide in Kenya'

Kenya has warned MPs from Somalia to stop using Nairobi as a safe haven from the chaos in their own country.

Immigration Minister Otieno Kajwang told the BBC he was on the verge of telling the MPs to register as refugees if they wanted to stay in Kenya.

The BBC's Will Ross, in Nairobi, says there are estimated to be 100 Somali MPs in Kenya at any one time.

Kenyan police arrested several Somali MPs in a round-up of people suspected of taking part in a riot last week.

Our correspondent says many Kenyans view their neighbouring country with increasing fatigue, concerned that the insecurity in Somalia could spread over their porous border.

'In their trenches'

Relations between the two countries have been strained in recent days after a demonstration in Nairobi over Kenya's detention of a controversial Muslim cleric turned violent.

“ I think we are about to say that either you come in as refugees and you go the camps or you go back to your own country ”
Otieno Kajwang

Kenyan officials blamed extremists from Somalia for orchestrating the violence and arrested about 300 ethnic Somalis - charging 141 with immigration offences and releasing the rest.

Among those detained and later released were 12 Somali MPs and several government officials.

Somalia protested to Kenya over the arrests, but Mr Kajwang said his patience with the MPs was close to running out.

"The politicians causing trouble in their country and coming to hide here and reorganise how to re-launch their positions in their trenches - it is not helpful to them and not helpful to us," he said.

"We think they must take the security of their country seriously and not endlessly look for Kenya as a safe haven after destroying their own institutions."

"I think we are about to say that either you come in as refugees and you go the camps or you go back to your own country."

I wish I can get that image of Kenya dragging Abdiwahab's thief uncle Ilqeyte by the collar from his hotel room after running away from the ICU. They deported him immediately. This is what they should do to all the qaswadayaal.

I don't know where Kenyan arrested anyone but your warlords who destroyed Mogadishu and wanted to enjoy the peace of Nairobi.

I remember the picture that accompanied this article. I shall try to find it.
Kenya kicks Somali warlord back to Somalia
Elizabeth Kennedy | Nairobi, Kenya

A member of a United States-backed secular alliance of warlords fighting for power in Somalia was kicked out of Kenya on Wednesday after police found him staying at a luxury hotel in Nairobi, authorities said.

Abdul Rashid Hussein Shiry, wearing a grey suit and tie as he was led out of the hotel, was taken to the airport for a flight back to neighbouring Somalia. It was not clear how long Shiry had been in Kenya, but alliance members have been on the run since the Islamic militias they opposed seized control of Somalia's capital, Mogadishu, on Monday.

The Kenyan government said in a statement on Wednesday that it was banning all forms of travel into Kenya by Somali warlords and their associates and that it "will not permit its territory to be used by those who persist in destabilising Somalia".

Mogadishu has been convulsed by violence for months as the Islamic Courts' Union, which has alleged links to al-Qaeda, strengthened its grip on the lawless country. Their advance on Monday came despite US support for the secular alliance of warlords.

The US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue, have confirmed cooperating with the secular warlords to root out terrorists who might be hiding in the Horn of Africa.

The US administration has not confirmed or denied giving money to the alliance, saying only that it supports those who fight terrorism.

"We're watching very carefully the developments there, and we will strategise more when I get back to Washington as to how to best respond to the latest incident there in Somalia," US President George Bush said on Tuesday.

Somalia has been without a real government since largely clan-based warlords overthrew dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991 and then turned on each other, dividing this nation of 8-million into rival fiefdoms. -- Sapa-AP
