He had an affair with his team mates girl freind, got her pregnet, paid for an abortion, all whilst being married with kids. Cheating on his wife is not the problem as he has done it before, but he slept with his team mates girl freind, hence why he lost the captaincy.

I agree. Even as a utd fan, rio is not really a vocal captain, leads by example, but not captain material. Making rooney captain will take away from his game. Gerrard def for me.

What exactly does a captain do? is there some sort of prestige that comes with the armband or is it window dressing?

Gerrard has to fight for his place and impress , The Italian Fabio Cappello to be regular , so does Owen Hargreaves if I was Cappello I would go for Hargreaves he is top player and a real pro but since he is a injury prone player I would go for a consistent experienced player like Frank Lampard who is a regular as well.

None of them were official captains. Rio has captained England before. But they were captain for the odd game.

Captain is a big deal in Football. Basically the spokeman and leader of the team. Captain is even a bigger deal in England. Extra prestige comes with it. Also captain usually gets a lot more money from stuff like sponsorship deals etc.

Btw I also don't believe rio is captain material and he will probably end up being this world cup's scapegoat for england, so I think gerrard is the best option.
