Somali kids failing at school

Post by Oxy- »

So I was watching this documentary on channel 4 about how the primary education system is failing in some parts of the country. Barton Hill Primary School in Bristol was named one of those worst exam score achieving in the country. Only a small percentage of 11year olds even pass a minimum. Coincidently, this same school has a large number of Somali kids attending looool    – when they were shooting the doc, everywhere you looked a Somali kid would come up on screen.

The subject they were closely examining was xisaab. They did a series of simple maths tests to see how much the ciyaal knew. One 11 year old Somali girl, who was slightly chubby and wore a headscarf – was asked to stand up and write down the answer to the question of …

10 multiplied by 10

The nacasad completely froze.  … She was totally unable to answer that. She smirked in silence. Her eyes balls, moving around in all directions, hoping that a miracle would happen and she would get the answer. Lakiin NO. Eventually she just shrugged her shoulders and said quietly “I don’t know”

Her parents should be ashamed. They should immediately enrol her to a private school for maths.

Now, that’s a very simple maths multiplication that’s actually meant for 6year old not an 11year old. The problem couldn't be more urgent. Research shows that failing to grasp the fundamentals of maths at primary school, leaves only a one in ten chance of catching up by the age of 16. And worse still, as adults they’re unable to answer simple mathematical questions.

The documentary also addressed the aspects of teachers. That in order for kids to do well at school, they MUST have good teachers to make that happen.

But, I think their parents need to do more to improve their learning at home.

Blame it all on hooyo n aabo :P
