Somali genetic genealogy, my attempt at subclades
I've recently gotten into this sort of stuff with a genetic genealogy group in Denmark, Danish Demes.
Like Somalis, historically we never had surnames, so surname projects don't really make any sense, but I like the approach so I decided to try it with Somali "Demes"
I've identified 10 haplogroup E1b1b1a1b Somali "Demes", 1 haplogroup E1b1b1a2 "Deme" and 1 haplogroup T "Deme".
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key= ... utput=html
The data I found from ysearch.org and the Danish study which tested 201 Somali men in Denmark.
Pretty incomplete data really. There is only one person who has tested for more than 12 markers. I don't even know what clan most of these fellows hail from.
It would be pretty cool to be able to actually identify like a "Modal Darood" or "Modal Hawiye" but it's a ways away from that sort of thing that's for sure.

The names I've given the Demes are temporary and arbitrary, one day hopefully I can give them better names.

I've emailed the researcher who conducted the original test, maybe she can help.

I don't understand what you're talking about but why would Somalis need surnames when they have the clan system?
Re: Somali genetic genealogy, my attempt at subclades
I'm confused, James what is the Somali's "grouping" that You've seen?

They don't need surnames at all, I was just referring to how most genealogical projects are surname-centric.Voltage wrote:I don't understand what you're talking about but why would Somalis need surnames when they have the clan system?
The groupings are Y-DNA lineage groups from a common ancestor, basically they're clans. I'm trying to find out if I can find the "modal haplogroup" for the various major clans

It's not grouping really, it's just people who have the same Y-dna markers that the researcher in question tested.Murax wrote:I'm confused, James what is the Somali's "grouping" that You've seen?

Well that's what I'm trying to find out. There hasn't been enough research to get definitive answers.Murax wrote:James Dahl wrote:It's not grouping really, it's just people who have the same Y-dna markers that the researcher in question tested.Murax wrote:I'm confused, James what is the Somali's "grouping" that You've seen?

Most of them belongs to subclade E1b1b1a1b V23+. Characteristic marker values: DYS19=11, DYS392=12
Here are some arabs who are also V32+
http://www.arabdnaproject.com/y-results-E1b1b1-M35.htm
Are these arabs from somalia? or somalis from them?

Neither, none of them are E1b1b1a1b.
They are distantly related through some ancient ancestor though.
