A generation that’s Qabil-unaware

Post by Oxy- »

So I went to go see a few of my relatives that live in a city nearby. They have kids that range from 14 – 9. With them were some of their cousins (who I’m not blood related to) and a further 3 other kids who live in the neighbourhood. So the children were a total of 11 in the house (and yes it was noisy as hell).

When I got chit-chatting to my nephews and nieces and the rest of the kids, I realized that they are completely unaware of Somalinimo. I suppose its not as if they are purposely avoiding to learn about their race – but rather that their parents didn’t feel a need to let them know everything about Somali history/culture.

When I asked them what they knew about the “Qabil” – the only thing they knew was what tribe they belonged to, other than that, nothing. I asked about if they knew anything about the civil war, most of them shrugged and one of the neighbourhood boy said “Were they fighting over food” – He thought that an entire civil war started in Somalia because of Somalis being greedy with food. Hilarious!

So after leaving my relatives house and travelling back home I thought to myself, is this a good thing or not?

Is it a good thing because there’s a growing generation of Somalis who don’t see qabil but only Somalis like themselves? Or a bad thing; a growing generation who know so little about their daqan and country….

A good thing assuming the youngsters occupy themselves in productive endeavors in the future. They'll develop an interest in their ancestry in the future and thats good but hopefully they will never be consumed by the primitive politics.

You asked little kids about qabiil. All the things you could have asked kids about, you decided to ask them about qabiil. You just ask yourself whether or not you want these kids to be where you are today in their future.
