When I got chit-chatting to my nephews and nieces and the rest of the kids, I realized that they are completely unaware of Somalinimo. I suppose its not as if they are purposely avoiding to learn about their race – but rather that their parents didn’t feel a need to let them know everything about Somali history/culture.
When I asked them what they knew about the “Qabil” – the only thing they knew was what tribe they belonged to, other than that, nothing. I asked about if they knew anything about the civil war, most of them shrugged and one of the neighbourhood boy said “Were they fighting over food” – He thought that an entire civil war started in Somalia because of Somalis being greedy with food. Hilarious!

So after leaving my relatives house and travelling back home I thought to myself, is this a good thing or not?
Is it a good thing because there’s a growing generation of Somalis who don’t see qabil but only Somalis like themselves? Or a bad thing; a growing generation who know so little about their daqan and country….
