Paedophiles using the web to groom victims 'could be tracked down by the way they type'

Paedophiles using the internet to target youngsters could be tracked down - by the way they use a keyboard.
Researchers are investigating ways to use technology which can determine a typist's age, sex and culture within ten keystrokes by monitoring their speed and rhythm.
Professor Roy Maxion, associate professor at Newcastle University, has been carrying out the research in the U.S.
Identity: New research which monitors the speed and rhythm of soming typing on a keyboard could be used to determine their age, sex and culture
Computer users are hooked up with electronic sensors to their fingers which monitors their typing patterns and speeds.
Former Northumbria Police Detective Inspector Phil Butler said the technique could useful for tracking down fraudsters and paedophiles.
The murder of Darlington teenager Ashleigh Hall last year by predator Peter Chapman, whom she met on Facebook, has raised fresh calls for extra security to protect young people on the internet.
Mr Butler, who heads Newcastle University's CyberCrime and Computer Security department, said: 'Professor Maxion takes 50 people at a time and hooks their fingers up to electronic sensors.
'He then videos, monitors and records their typing patterns, speeds and rhythms with a very accurate clock.
'He can now identify anyone using a keyboard within a 95 per cent accuracy within 10 keystrokes.

'As soon as you type ten numbers of letters he can work out your sex, your culture, your age and whether you have any hand injuries.
'In general women's typing tends to flow more and is a little quicker. You'd expect men's typing to be a little more heavy-handed and apparently that's the case.

'We're looking at the application of the research, particularly in relation to internet grooming.
'If children are talking to each other on Windows Live or MSN messenger, Microsoft might be able to see if there's an adult on there.'
The department, which was formed last summer, believes the new technology could be used to prevent fraud at cash machines.
Access to company information will also become a bigger issue for businesses from April, when the Government introduces regulations that could see companies fined up to £500,000 for serious breaches of data security.
Mr Butler said: 'We're going to submit a proposal to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for a bid of probably about £1million so that we can develop the research further.
'We'd like to look at various adaptations of the research for use in law enforcement, forensics and for companies trying to avoid fraud.'
Mr Butler is also a director of iSafely, a training programme which teaches parents and businesses how to deal with issues such as online fraud and cyber bullying.

He also works with Checkstick, a company which produces software stored on a USB stick that takes a snapshot every five seconds while a child is browsing the internet.
