I think this is just a publicity stunt by google but I would like to see my city get this high speed internet and video service for an affordable price.

I concur this is a publicity stunt. For one, fiber speed would cost at least $100/month, and with the current state of the economy, it isn't affordable. The fiber infrastructure will cost tens of $billions, and it isn't assured Google will recoup the investment. Most important, most people today prefer a connection that's to-go, similar to Clearwire's Wimax, and with the computing platform moving to the tablet (iPad, JooJoo, etc) model, Google's fiber would be far less appealing.Dionysus wrote:I think this is just a publicity stunt by google but I would like to see my city get this high speed internet and video service for an affordable price.

Dion,
Whoa..Google's really trynna take over the world, eh?!
Affordable...sure...but prolly for the big corps, and not the commoners. It'll be interesting to see how the local businesses react to it, though. In my city, a company was granted a contract to be the main provider of its wifi service...Despite being "locally owned" they had to go through hell and hot water. Doubt Google will do it with ease...but then again google is google. lol.

This is not a publicity stunt, but they are just paving the way to cloud computing, they're really trying to take out Microsoft pretty soon

Downloading an entire HD movie in a few seconds will depend on its upload speed. If it's being uploaded at (let's say) 5kbps, it would take days/weeks even if your download speed is 1Gbps.Mr. Yungnfresh wrote:@ 1Gbps...that's basically click and download an entire HD movie in about as much time as it takes to bring up a website right now. This is gonna be sick for P2P file network sharing, torrents, downloading, etc...but won't do much for anyone who just surfs or streams cuz that speed is quick, but you'll just click and load the page the same as u can do with 10Mbps.

That's only for P2P/bit-torrents...if it's already uploaded onto the internet, upload speed won't matter.manarab wrote:Downloading an entire HD movie in a few seconds will depend on its upload speed.
