I translated it as I was watching it…here you go guys!!! IT IS NOT GERMAN IT IS DUTCH..

The republic of Somalia a young African nation about 15 times larger than the Netherlands and with 3 million inhabitants.

Somalia, a desert country, still a nation of nomads who roam its empty land. Urbanization is on the rise though, many people are flocking to the cities. A country with few farmers but a lot of camels and cattle.

Somalis are black African people, there is a small Arab minority who are very influential. They mostly live in the coastal cities. They cross the bridge between the Arab world and Black Africa. 95% of the Somali population is Muslim. There are about half a million people living around the southern coastline. The remaining 2,5 million live in the scorching hot interiors.

The capital of the country is called Mogadishu, a city of 200,000 inhabitants. The architecture is very diverse and has a lot of different influences. The Italian influence is ubiquitous. Somalia got it’s independence in 1960. Mogadishu is the most important port of the country. It is situated close to one of the world busiest shipping lanes.

The bay is very idyllic. The technology used in the port however is very primitive, you could almost call it medieval. But modernization also struck this part of the world, the port is being modernized on a rapid pace with technological support and financial aid from the European Union. The new port of Mogadishu is one the nations greatest pride.

The revolutionary party are the current people in power. Their leader is Mohamed Siyaad Barre, a dictator in the making. Approximately six years ago he came into office trough a military coupé. The system the Italians put in place was entirely changed. It was a fairly unpopular system, it didn’t work in this country due to problems with corruption. He turned the country in a socialist state. Despite their egalitarian values it remained a strict dictatorship. Socialism without political parties.

This is what Somalis call ‘the sons of the revolution’. These children are indoctrinated with socialism every day in school.

Somalis are a very disciplined peoples. They work very hard for their country and try to make the best out of it. Everyone is involved.

The nomads that roam the deserts are suffering from severe famines. Somalia is a very dry country, people suffer from constant drought. In 1970 around 25% of the population was dependent on food aid for their survival. Food, clothes and medicine it did arrive but in small numbers. A lot of international organizations tried to help this impoverished country, despite the efforts it all arrived too late for nearly 200,000 Somalis.

Siyaad Barre was an enthusiastic supporter of Marxism. He tried to give everybody a job. At this sight you are about to see there are thousands of people working on a anti-desertification project. ‘You have to do it yourself’ – this is the motto of the nation. The state tries to help the people but it all comes down to the people. Most people in Somalia work manual jobs (building roads, farming, and construction).

Reading and writing, 90% of the Somalis can’t do it. The country is full of illiterates. Only the elite are able to read the newspaper. The socialist regime has send out students of secondary schools and universities to villages to help the local population to read and write. The regime is actively promoting literacy. These students are sent all over the country.

This was during Dabo Dheere, the most epic drought to hit Somalis in history yet still only 25% who were most assuredly all nomads needed food aid...today it is 100%.

An enlightened despot. But a despot nonetheless.
