Aromata, the Cape of Spices

Post by James Dahl »

The only site I am absolutely sure of the precise location of, in terms of ancient, archaeological sites in Somalia, is the site of Aromata, the market town known as the Cape of Spices.

North of the town of Tohen in the region of Bari, there is a table-land up on a rise right at the very tip of the Horn of Africa. It is below this table land (prime myrrh producing land), about a five or six kilometers north of Tohen where I believe Aromata is located.

Closer to Bargaal, about 95 kilometers south from there, is the town of Pano, though unlike Aromata it's location cannot be pinpointed with as much accuracy as Aromata. The town probably lies south of Bargaal either on or near Ras Ali Besquel.

I wonder, does East Africa University (Bosaso) have an archaeology dept?
