When people ask what is your clan?

Post by Digdahab »

Hello forumers

I've noticed a pattern where darood forumers take pride in naming their imediate sub clan when being asked about their clan by other somalis.
For me as a northerner and we are may I say closest to original Somali culture and norms, a very wrong and boastful answer.

The tradition says reply by your major clanfamily and when asked further you give your sub clan and when asked even further you provide sub sub clan if you hail from a famous clan and at very last lineage if the person asking is close to you .

This is our way of greeting.

Hawiya , Isaaq , Dir knows this practice very well .

I take offense if being replied back with imediate sub clan , a very ugly trait this is .
As it would imediately give me a bad impression of the person, switched around it's a tool to detect qabilists -

Dooros seems to more ignorant :?:

Digdahab, for example if a person is from famous laandheer lineages such as Reer Caynaanshe in the north they just say Reer Caynaanshe or sacad in the south they just say sacad, it all depends on the sub clan though.

when you are meeting a somali you cannot tell where from, it is rude to say Sacad or reer Caynaanshe
Always open with your major then sub IF you are asked further.

Why is it rude to say your sub clan? I never say Darood, I say Leelkase straight out and that`s how it`s suppose to be.

Xamud if you cannot think of why it could be deemed rude, I really don't know what more to say .

Small or big clan does not matter, I dislike very much when people say direct sub clan.

Digdahab, i agree usually some people say their sub clans and i get confused and ask them is that sub clan hawiye, isaaq or darood so it's always best to say the major group you come from.

You don't even have to be confused in these days we know most clans well .

But you should take offense .

Emperior if Bristol is the equvivalent of any deegan of reer Samatr then it's nothing wrong with your humoristic reply.

However if you go to a Hawiye dominated place and you know it, then your reply is offensive

How is it rude sbx? people either know your clan or they don`t, what` s the point of saying Darood when Darood got like 20 sub clans, the person asking you is bond to repeat the question mar labad so why not just tell him/her the first time and it over with.

It`s a well know fact that the average somali knows atleast 4 or 5 Darood sub clans seeing how Darood is the only clan who neighbour Dir,Issaq,Hawiye,D&M.

I swear that`s what couple of old ladies on the plain kept saying, they were arguing about if I was reer Samatar or not for some odd reason  waxaan is iri waa Ogadeen reer samatarkan ay sheegayan, until Abdikarim and Nobleman explained to me that reer Samatar is a sub clan of Haber Awal.

for example CIA already made a clan map, my sub sub clan made the list, I still say Isaaq .

How is it rude sbx? people either know your clan or they don`t

Here is the problem in its very own essence, do you honestly take that much pride in your qabiil?? ....
