Reer Europe confuse me

Post by paidmonk »

Especially the UK crew.

Most of you came to the UK when you couldn't walk, some of you had your grandparents settle in the UK and yet some qaxooti kids like shirib and voltage and myself who came to America at age 10 have better grasp of English grammar, literary trends, and Western concepts than you guys.

I used to think, from the things I saw on Somalinet, that a lot of you reer Waqoyi kids just came to the West but you fuckers have been here when some of our clans were still fighting over grass, but you guys are reer magaal who act like reer baadiya for the most part. Maybe its culture since reer Xamar are well-cultured back home and we had italian and arab neighbors where your grandparents and parents only saw somalis back home, that's the best explanation.

Explain. :|

Side note but did you ever notice the Somalis who self-identify themselves as "reer magaal" are less cosmopolitan the Somalis who don't? I am talking about the ones who actually grew up back in Somalia. :?

Who is reer magaal, the white color worker with mac and in trendy clothes or a south side Chicago banger? Basically the reer magaal concept of Somalis from Somalia, is an old man who still calls himself ciyaalka xaafada and ciroolay chick who is a chain smoker. :?

Somalis in the UK usually live in multicultural enclaves were it would not be shocking if both your neighbours were somalis. All in all we have less exposure to cadaan folks, especially in London.

Mind you places like Cardiff were forget the younger generation, u'll find loads of people in their 40's born there, but yet still very somali.

Paidmonk, you just need to wach qabyo 2 to find your answer: reer UK still hold on to their somali culture and, as far as the older generation go, don't intend to adopt western culture. Whereas in america, the younger generation don't know too much about their somali culture and see themselves as an 'American' or a 'Somali American' rather than a Somali.

I watched qabyo when I was younger, probably the only Somali "movie" I remember.

I really think it goes down to a deeper level. I think it has less to do with Europe and North America and more to do with reer Waqoyi (original UK settlers) and reer Xamar (majority US settlers). I think the first batch of UK settlers set the early trend for the rest of Somalis in that area. And there is a vast distinction between Waqoyi (xenophobic, closed society) culture compared to Xamari (open, multi-cultural, multi-racial, multi-lingual) culture. See me and most reer Xamar from the smallest towns like Buaale to places like Beletweyn and Kismayo, we had neighbors who were every race and nationality, so for us to once again adopt another culture was no problem, cadaan people were a common sight for us. For that same reason, there is no concrete Xamari culture (excluding reer Galguduud & Mudug of course) so there is no attachment to the homeland for diaspora where the reer Waqoyi have close ties to home and their culture, and this set a trend for the whole UK. I think that explains the cultural ties and strength of the UKers better than north americans who are mostly reer Xamar.

Once again the triumphant paidmonk answers the anomaly. :rose:

Horta whats with ciyaalka america as well? As soon as they set foot inside the US, they totally dump anything remotely somali about them...main one being their language. Iv seen so many youtube videos of somali-americans folks who are taking part in one of those discussions ama debates regarding somalia, clan, soomali politics etc. All the people taking part are soomali and the person usually asking the questions na af soomali buu ku hadleeya. Iyagana af ingiirsi bey ku jawaabeyaan saying something along the lines of..." Like, I dont know any somaali but I like, totally get where so and so is coming from like....like because i came to the US when i was like 13...like thats about like....10 years ago and i havnt been back to my country...'coz the US is like home, and its like, so safe here'. Then qofka su'aalaha weydineeya wuxu yidhaaha...'Haa hey, hadaaad wadanka tobaan sano un joogtey, af soomali maxad garanweydey?" Then the Yank would start saying.."Yaa?...Im sorry, somali makarooni o!" (aka somaali ma garaneeyo).

Sad really. :|
