6 High Ranking Officers Defected
Monday, 30 November 2009 23:26
Reports reaching the Ogaden Online service desk confirm the defection of
6 high ranking military officers. It is reported that the recent ONLA
commando attacks may have played a role in the defection of these high
ranking officers. It is reported that all six officers who were based in
military garrison in and around Addis Ababa were scheduled to be
deployed in Ogaden.
The names and the ranks of the officers who defected are as follows. The
spelling of the names may be incorrect:
1. Colonel Tadhase.
2. Captain Abraha.
3. Captain Haylo.
4. Second Lieutentant Da'ud.
5. Second Lieutenant Gabre.
6. Second Lieutenant Yohanas.
Aside from the defections, reliable sources indicate that there is an
increased infighting within the Woyane militias following the
spectacular losses in the hands of the ONLA commandoes in the many parts
of Ogaden.

Ethnic Somali rebels in Ethiopia's Ogaden region claimed Monday they killed 90 government troops in recent clashes, but the government denied any losses, claiming victory instead.
In a statement, the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF) said it had "conducted a coordinated military operation" in Kebridehar, Degahabur and Jijiga, in response "to increased harassment and war crimes being committed by the Ethiopian Army".
The ONLF"conducted coordinated military operations ... killing 90 soldiers and wounding more than 100 others", the group said, before adding that six Ural military vehicles were destroyed and dozens of assault rifles captured.
The group did not disclose when the incidents took place, but said "engagements are still going" on in one locality of the vast region.
Government spokesman Bereket Simon admitted "incidents", but said it was the rebels who sustained heavy losses.
"They are trying to hide their losses. Once again the militia managed to get them and inflict heavy damage on the ONLF," he told AFP.
Bereket said the group sustained around 80 deaths during the fighting.
Ethiopia's military launched an offensive against the ONLF after they attacked a Chinese-run oil venture in the Ogaden in 2007, killing 77 people, including nine Chinese nationals.
Addis Ababa recently announced that the rebellion was on "its last knees" as a result of "successful" campaigns against them.
"It was the first time they were trying to regroup since the campaign in the region," Bereket said.
The ONLF is fighting for the independence of ethnic Somalis in Ethiopia's oil-rich Ogaden region. They say the local people have been marginalised by Addis Ababa.

All this is happening when the Pro-Ethiopian goverment reports
ONLF to become Legal opposition?
While new comers to the extremism camp, the likes of "Ginbot 7" warms up to cozy with the regime in Asmara, the old timers are giving up arms and Asmara and are rumored to have shown their interest to join the legal process. Weeks after the WSLF deal, the Ethiopian government and the ONLF may be on the verge of signing a deal where the ONLF will become another legal opposition abiding by the constitution.
Although we have not been able to confirm the "news to come yet" ,if true, this is a huge development and will help the democratic process in Ethiopia immensely.
As you all know for the first time Ethiopians all over the country including people in the Somali Regional state will be casting their vote on May 23, 2010. [aigaforum 04/29/10]

Re: ONLF making some noise
Interesting times ahead,
The election is near and the whole Ethiopia is tense. Last Election showed how much hate there is for the TPLF. This time it could really boil over with that explosive BBC report and increased ethnic tensions.

Is it better for Ogadens to focus their energy on economic independency, business and property ownership, education of their people and non-violence political activism instead of wasting their time fighting for equal rights, freedom and seccesion for the last 60yrs.

Re: ONLF making some noise
That last article is from a Tigray website
Things arent looking good for Meles with the "fake" elections on the way, he is drawing plans to keep it clean this time.He has to also put on a show for the Western Observers, but he probably already knows they wont be writing anything pretty about his so-called Election.
He faces stiff competition from Medrek who are a cooperation of opposition groups trying to overthrow Meles miraculously through the "ballot" , but they know they cant win a "fixed" Election but they will be looking to stir the same trouble that followed the 2005 election inorder to make somekind of inroad into the Goverment. This group is playing an important role from our view, it proves the "corrupt" and "oppressive" nature of the Addis regime further legitimizing our struggle.
There is also many worries for Meles on the Military front, the obvious been the Ogaden where he is loosing alot of resources, many in the Military have refused to even be deployed here. The Amhara are back, they have started a rebellion in there region under the Agazi army and the EPPF.They conducted many operations recently specially around Gonder. His Tigray region is also the centre of another armed opposion the TPDM, a Tigray group who i beleive think Meles betrayed there original mandate of an independent Tigray, this was outlined in the Tigray Manifesto of the 70's.There begining to show alot of promise. In the west there are the Gambella and Beni Shangul rebels allied to the Amhara apparently, there making moves aswell.Further south the OLF and SLD(Sidama) although very weak at the moment they have great potential, both will probably enter into some kind of deal with the ONLF down the road as they share commong geography and political outlook more so the Oromo.Meles will become outstreched Militarily soon when the armed opposition gets moving, The Ogaden will become Victim number 1 for him.
ONLF has inspired the Ethiopians to pick the A.K and as ONLF Foreign minister said "anagaa Itoopiya qeybinayna hada ka bacdi".
Long live JWXO

Great to hear. The ONLF are doing some serious damage. If it’s true what you said about the Amhara waking up; then it’s RIP TPLF

What, Economy, business, property. It is not as easy as watching Fox news. it is not walking in the park. basic human needs and freedom are denied these people for decades. broaden your horizon before making suggestions. peace.IRONm@N wrote:Is it better for Ogadens to focus their energy on economic independency, business and property ownership, education of their people and non-violence political activism instead of wasting their time fighting for equal rights, freedom and seccesion for the last 60yrs.
