The Extent of French influence in Djbouti

Post by Queen_Arawello »

I was just watching this documentary about Djbouti and i was surprised at the strong French influence ( culture/language), some of the people interviewed speak french better then their mother tongue  they appear to be more assimilated to outside influences then the rest of Somalia which has been colonised by both British and the Italians. You will hardly find Somalis that speak Italian in present day Somalia..my question is why has the French managed to have a large impact on Djbouti and rest of Somalis were able to resist the influence of european colonizers :?

Because French culture is very influential just look at Morroco and all the north African countries that were colonized by France or also those black African countries that speak French as their first language Litle correction Somaliland has been colonized by England, And Somalia by Italia

The French always had a strong influence in Djibouti due to a strong presence. Many of my family speak French but fought them at the same time. My grandad's brother spent many years in a French prison.

But you are wrong to say they know it more than their mother tongue. Reer Djibouti speak the Reer Galbeed dialect which starts West of Hargeisa all the way to Djibouti. Just because you dont understand their dialect doesnt mean they cant speak Somali. They speak much better Somali than other regions including Xamar. The only difference is Reer Djibouti are multilingual.
