High-Paying Science Careers

1. Surgeon: This is one of the highest paying careers. Period. A surgeon goes through 10 – 15 years of training, in order to reach a certain level of competency. Surgeons who specialize in one area can make even more money, since their particular skills can be in very specific demand. And, since it requires knowledge of the body and its systems, it is part of the biological sciences.


2. Anesthesiologist: In order to become an anesthesiologist, you need years of training — including the same training it takes to become a physician. Knowledge of chemistry is helpful as well. With people likely to continue to need surgery and want to be comfortable, it is likely that this job will be in high demand in the coming decade.


3.Oral surgeon: If you are looking to take dentistry to the next level, you might consider oral and maxillofacial surgery. This profession not only deals with extracting wisdom teeth, but also helps put people back together after accidents, oral cancer and other conditions.

4.Nurses: Many nurses have advanced training in medicine, and must know anatomy. And there is a shortage of nurses in some areas. In fact, nurses are in high demand, are expected to continue to be demand in the next decade — especially with the aging population. A nurse with experience in end of life issues or geriatric nursing could do very well.

5.Internist: With the incidence of diabetes, high blood pressure and other chronic illnesses on the rise, it is no surprise that internists are in high demand. These physicians can help treat adult diseases, and must be familiar with biology and pathology in order to help diagnose and treat a wide variety of medical conditions.

6.X-ray technician: You can get a good career as an x-ray technician without having to go through more than a decade of schooling. You do need to have an aptitude for technological science, and be willing to learn some basics about the human body, but it is a good science based career that doesn’t require insane amounts of training.

7.Physician assistant: With more people needing more access to the dwindling number of health care professionals, the job of physician assistant is expected to be in demand over the next decade. These health care professionals can practice medicine under proper supervision, and must have a basic knowledge of anatomy and pathology.


8.Psychiatrist: Get into the nuts and bolts of what makes people tick, and help them overcome their problems. A psychiatrist has to look into the processes of the brain, and understand drug interactions and other issues.
Environmental consulting: With the interest in the environment, it is little surprise that environmental consulting is becoming a hot topic, and a job that is in demand. You have to learn about natural processes and science, as well as ecology, in order to be an environmental consultant.


9.Natural sciences manager: A natural sciences manager oversees others as they use science to develop new products and processes, and as they work to make the world better. You do need a science education and background in order to do this job.

10.Mining: If you are a mine geologist, consultant or manager, you can make good money. You do have to have a background in geosciences and natural science, as well as some chemistry, in order to excel in this field.

12.Green energy: Even though oil remains the main energy source, green energy is gaining some popularity. Engineers and others will be needed to increase the efficiency of alternative energy sources, as well as design and build different types of devices. If you have training in biology, physics, chemistry, ecology, or a number of other science disciplines, you could find a good job in green energy in the next decade.


13.Civil engineer: One of the jobs expected to be in high demand over the next 10 years is civil engineer. With the infrastructure of the U.S. crumbling, civil engineers will be needed to help design and build roads and bridges, as well as design urban spaces.

19.Computer programming: Computers run most aspects of our lives. This means that there will be a need for programmers who can create new programs and keep things moving. Computer programming is expected to continue to grow.


20.Computer software engineer: This job is expected to grow explosively over the next decade. You need an understanding of computer technology and math to be a computer software engineer, as well as programming skills and a willingness to continue to learn and develop your skills.


21.Computer and Information Systems Manager: You can make six figures if you know how information and data work. Over the next decade, computer and information are only going to become more integrated in life, and if you can manage these systems, you could find a good job.

22.Military technology: Science and engineering can combine to create a good job in military technology. With wars continuing, and no expectation for true peace in the next decade, military technology is a field that is expected to grow.


23.Forensic science: There are a number of avenues to pursue related to forensic science. You will find that these jobs are demand, as those able to analyze data, and those who have a basic understanding of physics and biology are needed to help solve crimes.
