The nephew of a former Somalian dictator has avoided jail after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl.

Omar Artan, 21, had sex with the girl after meeting her at a service station in Preston last October.

A court heard that up until the assault Artan had been a respected citizen and had won an award from the police chief commissioner for his work with African youth.

Artan's uncle Mohammed Siad Barre, a military dictator, was president of Somalia from 1969 to 1991.

His father was finance minister during Barre's reign, the court heard.

Artan, of Ascot Vale, pleaded guilty in the Victorian County Court to sexual penetration of a child under 16.

Judge Roy Punshon today placed Artan on a two-year jail sentence wholly suspended for two years.

Judge Punshon said Artan, who was married in January this year, felt shamed by the sexual assault, had pleaded guilty and had previously been of good character.

Artan will be a registered sex offender for 15 years.

In an obituary in The New York Times following Barre's death in 1995, he was described as a dictator who left power with his country in civil war and on the brink of starvation.

"General Siad Barre's rule was marked by a war with Ethiopia, a flip-flop in political alliances from the Soviet Union to the United States, and growing allegations of human rights abuses," the article said

I don't see what his dead uncle has to do with anything. I do think it is disgusting that a 21 year old man raped that poor girl.
