Every K'naan video I watch
there is a war between Canadians and Somalis about what K'naan is. In my estimation, K'naan forfeited the right to belong to Somalia the day he took Canadian citizenship. At the least he is "Somali-Canadian" but in my estimation, the Canadians should have claim to his identity before the Somalis oo calaacalayo.
Re: Every K'naan video I watch
K'naan chose to be somali first and then a canadian after he waved the somali flag on the stages, so i guess somalis have every right to claim him since he is currently the most known somali.

I think he straddles the line between a "Canadian" musician and a "Somali" musician. I mean he'll one day do an interview about Somali pirates and the war, and sing a song about growing up in Xamar, and the next day he'll sing a love song duet with Nelly Furtado.

Distinction between natural status and adoptive state!
Do adopted kids search for their birth parents?
Do parents search for kids they gaveup for adoption?
Do adoptive parents have legal right to prevent the union or formation of relations between child and natural parents?
K'naan has the moral high ground to decide on his associations. Case closed

It is like giving charity. If you have food and one of your brothers is plumb and the other is starving, of course you would help the starving one. He is giving charity to Somalia's name, but when asked to give his identity he explicitly said "Somali-Canadian".almoha wrote:K'naan chose to be somali first and then a canadian after he waved the somali flag on the stages, so i guess somalis have every right to claim him since he is currently the most known somali.

I think ultimately people try to put too much on K'naan. He's a poet, not a spokesman for Somalia or refugees or pirates or Africa or whatever else people try to make him the face of. He's a poet who wants to express what's on his mind through music. People should just enjoy his work for what it is, and not try and make something else out of it.

Re: Every K'naan video I watch
Guys I am not really endorsing K'naan here or whatever, but commenting on a disturbing pattern I have seen whenever I watch a video of his on youtube. It is almost always Canadians and Somalis arguing about what he should be labeled and I think since he is a product of Canada, the Canadians have rights over the Somalis even if they are my people. A good part of the experience he raps about is from Somalia, but he is not a product of Somalia. Saado Cali and Magool are products of Somalia, not Knaan.

Re: Every K'naan video I watch
Canadian is a national construct. Somali is an ethnicity. You can change your nationality but not your ethnicity. Thus, Knaan is Somali who currently lives in Canada.
