1st FOOTBALL, NOW OCTOPUS PREDICTING INTERNATIONAL POLITICS

Post by Daanyeer »

First it was football, now an octopus pundit has turned to predicting international politics
17th July 2010

Their predilection for prediction became well known during the World Cup - but now it seems the humble octopus is looking for a future career in politics.
An eight-legged clairvoyant named Cassandra has called the winner of the upcoming election in Australia - a whole month before Australians go to the polls.
The octopus, who resides at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, was given the option of an election poster featuring current prime minister Julia Gillard, or a poster featuring Liberal opposition leader Tony Abbott.

To hasten Cassandra's choice, a tasty morsel was placed in front of each.
With little hesitation, the octopus embraced Miss Gillard - signalling a Labor victory on August 21.

The publicity stunt was a rare light-hearted moment in what promises to be a bitter battle between the main political parties Down Under.

The election campaigns of both parties will no-doubt focus on the national reticence to accept further immigration and asylum seekers into the island continent.
Ironically, it will be a debate led by Welsh-born Miss Gillard and English-born Mr Abbott.
Economic management and climate change are also likely to be on the agenda.

Only time will tell if Cassandra has the same soothsaying abilities as fellow octopus Paul - who shot to fame with his 100% success record during the World Cup.

Paul, who resides in a German sea life centre, predicted the outcome of all of Germany's seven matches in the tournament, and also correctly selected Spain as the eventual nation to lift the trophy.
It made him an instant celebrity cephalopod in Spain, and Madrid Zoo immediately began talks with Oberhausen's Sea Life Centre to have him transferred.
So far the German sea life centre has refused all offers.
