A man wanted in the bludgeoning death of a man in Wales seven years ago has been arrested in Toronto.
Police say Mohamed Abdi Mahad, 27, fled to Canada in 2003 after the murder of a newly wedded postal worker. He has been living here illegally ever since, authorities said.
Mr. Mahad, who goes by several aliases including Kalid Sharif and street names Mafia, London Boy and Yabada, was arrested without incident at his home at Dupont Street and Landsdowne Avenue at 9:30 yesterday morning.
South Wales Police had issued a warrant for his arrest along with a reward offer of £5,000 ($8,100) for tips leading to his conviction. He was also put on the U.K.'s Top 10 Crimewatch wanted list.
The victim, 22-year-old Mohammed Musa Mahoud, was with friends late one night outside his home in Cardiff when a man approached and smashed him over the head with a metal weightlifting bar. He died later of his injuries.
A year after the murder, the victim's parents and Welsh police put out an appeal for help in the case. Mr. Musa's parents told media their lives "have stood still" since his death.
Mr. Mahad is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court at 10 a.m. today.
