Lets do this again, I'm a student of History and I love it. Lets debate on who was the greatest General of all in History of mankind?

Prophet Muhammad (scw) see people overlook Prophet Mohammeds (SAW) numerous skills in various fields because of the emphasis on Religious Prophet part as the main tag, perhaps rightfully so but I thought I would add him into the list because I consider him one of the greatest Generals.

Khalid bin Walid: Never lost a battle, lead Muslim during time of rapid expansion. Defeated Byzantine and Persian Empires

Napoleon: Ended the French revolution, major military power in Europe for many years

Ghenghis Khan: Captured most of the known world in very little time

Alexander the Great: Captured much of the known world

Here is why i wouldn't put the nabi saw as among the Greatest Generals. Even though he was a great military leader, he didn't fight much outside of his area and he only captured parts of the Arabian Peninsula.

I would say Cumar ibn Al Khatab instead. When he was the caliph, Islam spread drastically all through the Middle East, to Egypt, Persia and Turkey.

1. Salahudin Al-Ayubi (ra) was the greatest general of all times in my views. If you need proofs, just do your research in all western military academies. His military tactics are taught there.

2, Khalid Binu Walid was also a great general.

3. Who was the muslim leader who led 2000 North African Berbers and conquered all of Portugal and Spain? I am talking about the fella who burnt their boats after they reached the beach and stated to his fellow Muslim mujaahidiin "we have enemy ahead of us, we have the sea behind us, and our promise is to meet in paradise".

Shirib, just like the first battle of Mutah when Khalid Bin Waleed (ra) first took up command which ended in a draw; It was a similar situation for Genghis khan in Vietnam. It was a draw and withdrawn battle from both sides and it wasn't a victory nor defeat for him.

I'm also surprised that you don't have Khalid (ra) in your list since we are talking about pure Generals not only leaders and you taking the prophet (scw) out of the equation.

inbetween Cumar and Khalid, I would say Khalid (ra) was war General where Cumar (ra) was a leader.

I'm sorry my knowledge of Khalid is only to the battle of Uhud and few of the other early military expeditions.

Did he take part in the conquests to Syria, Iraq, Egypt, etc.?

If so, put him on my list too

To be a great general or the greatest general one does not have to have conquered lands, not necessarily. One must have kept and defended the lands under his control from enemies (both domestic and foreign) and have kept the peace amongst his populace. So using this criteria I would say Abu bakr As-sidiiq to be the greatest general. Because when the islamic state at its infancy was experiencing its worst period, and madina's streets were awashed with blood and faced enemies from every corner possible, Sayiduna Abu Bakr has managed to defeat the apostates with very little resources and manpower and succeeded to unite the muslim under the sharica and braved the way for Umar ibn Khataab and other successors to conquer other lands and spread islam to evry corner successfully.
