The origin of the term SOMALIA
Me and my bro were arguing about the origin of the name Somalia and he was on about how Italians first used it in common vocab , etc.
Amidst the chaos of the conversation, my dad chimes in from the corner and says, "The name has been coined previously, the Arabs referred to us by As-Sumal long before colonialism. The name was first coined when Hatshepsut made her expedition to the Land of Punt (this is recorded fact). During her expedition, she saw large herds of camels and started to associate the people with camels. She said to a camel herder one day, "Soo maal" which means Milk it, that phrase would be used so extensively during her journey that it became the adopted name for that group."
.....
Discuss. I looked up what my dad said and Hatshepsut did in fact visit the Land of Punt and brought back myrhh, which is native to Somalia among a few other regions nearby.

Re: The origin of the term SOMALIA
the term "Somali" is Somali right ? or is the real deal just "Somal", what ever it is we need to obtain the original and use that name instead of Somalia.
by the way is Somalia true definition, "the land of, Go milk" ? Loool.

Re: The origin of the term SOMALIA
This would have been interesting if I could only find a book which talks about it!!!

In a nutshell, the Arabs were there, heard these nomads yelling "War SOOMAAL" for the milk and went back home to the Arab world and said "hey we went to Al-Somaal"
oh and lugha is feminine followed somalia

Re: The origin of the term SOMALIA
horta when the mongals invaded iraq they used the books of the Bait al-Hikma library as a bridge for their armies and thus a huge chunk of history was destroyed, I wonder did the same thing happen to Somalia, not two Somalis seem to agree on one thing about their history except for their camels and who should have the upper hand in the management of camel parking business!!!

Re: The origin of the term SOMALIA
I would like to think it meant somthing far more interesting than just "milk it".
Re: The origin of the term SOMALIA
greenday if you know what camels mean to Somalis you would have no objections in the name. Somalis flirt with camels in their poems, they cry about them in their stories, they brag about them, they even fight over them. dude the thing you would give your fiancee would be camels before given gold, to a Somali gold comes next to camels.
a man with camels is honour, respect, pride, strenth, wealth, big dik etc to the Somali woman.

So in old Somali means cow, like sac
Maal means to live off of.
Soomaal to live off cows, or livestock
Biiyomaal, the ones who live off water
Tumaal the ones who live off beating metal
Dumaal the ones who live off their dumaashi
