Khadija Balwo, the first Somali women's rights pioneer

Khadiija Balwo born. 1920's? was the first National Somali singer and a prominent women right's pioneer. From the town of Dilla in Awdal Region. Khadija Belwo. part of the core group of the Balwo band and singing partner to Cabdi Sinimo, the founder of the Balwo genre and father of modern Somali music. She was the woman who destroyed the mythical taboo that women couldnt sing, recite poetry etc. :up:


She gave inspiration to Khadija Dalays

That is an interesting stuff there. I also admired Maryan Mursal as she is said to be the first Somali woman ever to drive a taxi in Somalia. She was driving a taxi at a time when most Somali women were unable to drive a normal car. It's that really quite bravery..

The lady in that article who pioneered women's rights, Khadiijo Cabdullahi Dalays, is Marehan, reer Diini close cousin of former president Siyaad. You confused her with passing reference to Khadiijo Balwo, a different woman. She was born in Baydhabo and also sang in May May.

Here she is singing a Marehan traditional dance at a welcoming party for Cabdi Bile:

Khadiijo Balwo, Dalays, Shamis were all great women who started gender equality in Somalia. Great women. :up:
