Facebook developer donates $100,000 to legalise cannabis campaign

One of the early developers of Facebook has donated $100,000 (£62,700) to a group attempting to legalise cannabis in California.

Sean Parker, managing partner of Founders Fund, speaks at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in San Francisco

Sean Parker, 30, gave the money to the campaign for Proposition 19, otherwise known as the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act, 2010.

People in the state voting on November 2 for a new governor and for new congressmen will also have the opportunity to say whether they want to legalise the drug.

Mr Parker, who revolutionised the music industry by setting up the Napster music-sharing system, joined Mark Zuckerberg in developing the social networking website in 2004.

He left the company the following year after being arrested for the possession of cocaine, although he was not charged.

Dustin Moskovitz, who co-founded Facebook with Mr Zuckerberg at Harvard University, has already given donations totalling $70,000 (£44,000) to the legalisation campaign.

Mr Parker is portrayed by the singer Justin Timberlake in The Social Network, a film about the birth of Facebook that was released this month.

He has not commented about his donation to the pro-cannabis group.

Stephen Gutwillig, a spokesman for the pro-legalisation group Drug Policy Alliance, said: "He is a member of the generation that really gets it. We think he's pivotal to the future of drug policy reform in the country."
