German population experts seek baby bonus:-

Germany needs a baby-bonus to fight the trend of a rapidly declining population, a German think tank said.

The Berlin Institute for Population and Development, a non-profit organization, said if the government would introduce financial incentives for women in their 30's to have children, the trend could slow.

The German baby-boomers, women between 35 and 45, account for a population of 7.5 million. There are some 5 million women aged between 25 and 34.

Financial incentives need to target the older and larger generation first, as they still carry the potential to have children but gradually lose their fertility, the institute said.

The baby boomers could fight the trend of Germany's diminishing population and help their retirement pensions -- their children would secure state pensions that remain unsafe due to a dwindling work force.

The German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported the study Thursday.
