The amount of naivity and being out of reality is some times amazing.
We live in a time, where circumstances are that if anyone is openly supportive of jihadi groups anywhere in the world except Palestine (only Hamas, not local al Qaida), they will at least be thrown in jail. Now how can people except culama and other leaders be absolutely open of things that will put them in great danger if their opinion differs from the standard set by US government? Only ones who really can say whatever they want are those free ones, who actually travel to the lands of jihad and they are not very many.
I used to live in Saudi-Arabia for many years some time ago and I personally know maybe 20 people who were arrested because they said something in a wrong place. Some of them were away for years and about others I never heard again. And now I'm talking about nobodys who didn't do or say anything major. Then what will happen to big names who can actually affect and move lot of people? Also quite often shuyukh and ducaat were jailed after opening their mouth (for example famous daaci Khalid al-Rashid got 15 years for calling for a response for cartoons about our Prophet SCWS). In KSA it's forbidden to make ducaa to mujaahidiin in masaajid and that's why nowadays ducaa is in the form of: Allahummansur ikhwanina/muslimin fi kulli makaan etc.
I know some of famous culama who speak straight about politics only to some of their students they know well in a private lesson in shaykh's own house, but in public lessons they stay quiet on same issues. I also once witnessed a very famous shaykh answering certain way to a question in a public lesson and after the lesson saying exact opposite to his own student.
And someone honestly believes that culama can say what they want?
It's not the first time when something similar happens. In the time of Imam Ahmad culama were much greater in number and in quality than in our times, and still when the ruler wanted to force the doctrine about Qur'an being created, only 3 opposed it publicly while others said what the ruler wanted.
People use your brains and recognize the reality around you.
