Come and work in Africa!

Post by marcassmith »

Hey Guys,

Its a saturday here in Hargesia, the first day of the week and I am chilling in my room and listening to some nice music :? . The first part of the day is from 8-10am then there is a break from 10am - 4pm. I have afternoon classes from 4-6pm. As you can imagine, my job isn't too difficult but its very challenging and you are required to be as professional as possible. Last week, I was able to travel to some of the rural areas, had camel milk and meat  . It was amazing. It gave me time to contemplate and it was very tranquil to say the least.

This is the best thing I have done in my life. I am really enjoying myself and relishing what the future holds.

I would advise you all to travel to Africa and find jobs here, there is a demand for talented and educated young people in the development of the Somali pennisula. 9-5 life is depressing and I was diagnosed as being clinically depressed, one of many stress-related illnesses, before I left to come to Somaliland and turn a new chapter in my life. I would suggest you turn your backs on this rat-race and explore your curiosity. Life isnt all about money, mortgage and building a surplus of excessive amounts of money that you'll never really spend, why should your children spend your hard earned money. Let them fend for themselves. :?

Being in Somaliland, you needn't worry about bank overdrafts, bailiffs coming to your house - harassing you with eviction notices. Here, the people are mellow and everything moves at a slow, albeit, semi-productive pace. Its perfect!

There is website that has so many opportunities - both voluntary and paid vacancies. Please look at it and pursue your dreams.

http://www.idealist.org - there are jobs in Somaliland, Somalia, East Africa and all over the world.

I will be there soon, but its not completely easy. How the hell did you end up working in Hargeisa? You have a business of your own I imagine, otherwise its a totally impossible thing if you're a young professional to work in Africa.

Monk,

Brother, have no pre-conceived expectations. I came here with an open mind. I applied to be part of international teachers programme, a programme run by Hargesia University. I was interviewed and given the position. I teach at Hargesia University. I work there three days a week and I am currently looking to fill the other days of week. I have no business interests here, not yet anyways.

There is large number of diaspora Somalis here all doing their bit. Most work for international aid agencies and local NGOs. These people often frequent flashy hotels and cafes with White and other expatriates. Its not difficult to be a young professional here - whatever that means. There are occasional parties that would make any Al-shababi wet dream's come true. I went to few of these parties but its rather tedious - full of white expatriate and the occasional hippies on the civilising mission - the idea that its their moral duty to literally help Somalilanders. There are nice restaurants and the social life is very active.

I checked and they only have positions for people with 5 years experience, I graduate soon and Id love a job that would take me to Africa (even better if it was Somalia), but there are no graduate entry positions in these areas!

There is always something to do. Don't be put off by level of experience. You can do volunteering to compensate for this. Volunteering position usually pay a stipend and provide other benefits. Also, most of these jobs require a masters degree as entry level. So, perhaps, you might want consider investing in a masters programme, that is if you are looking to work in this industry in the long run. If you have enthusiasm and your dedicated you will find a position that is perfect for you. Some of the position will accept a bachelors degree and relevant experience.

Good Luck!

marc, much saver than most US cities but not safe as Hargeisa. I come here twice a year and I've never seen gunfights or ppl dying from gunshots. Some premeditated assassinations take place every once in a while. Nope, u don't need a visa but u'll have to cough up $20 at the airport unless you are carrying a Somali passport. I was supposed to be in Hargeisa three weeks ago but cancelled because of some work related circumstances.

Somaliland and Puntland need some real advice when it comes to travel between the two. Each side wants you to have its licence plates when crossing the border. This is ridiculous at best! Why not come up with a joint agreement that eliminates this huge hurdle. They can still generate revenue without imposing two license plates.
