GIRLS' SCHOOL ORDERED TO WEAR TROUSERS AFTER COMLAINTS 'SHOR

Pupils at top all-girls' school ordered to wear trousers after complaints about 'indecent' short skirts
26th October 2010

A top girls school is preparing to force all its pupils into trousers after receiving complaints about the 'indecent' length of their skirts.

The headteacher of Sandbach High School, Cheshire, has announced plans to ban skirts from next September because pupils are wearing them too short.

The 1,400-pupil comprehensive is one of the top 50 best schools in England, achieving an 'Outstanding' in its recent Ofsted inspection.
But staff, fellow pupils and some parents have raised concerns at the drastically short skirts some of the girls were wearing.

Headteacher John Leigh said: 'To remove the problem of inappropriate short shirts once and for all we are considering banning skirts with effect from September 2011.'

Mr Leigh said girls who wore 'especially short' skirts had already been given detention and letters had been sent to pupils' parents, but many girls were unwilling to follow the rules, and now all girls, from years seven to 11, could be made to wear trousers in future.

Mr Leigh said he raised the issue of a skirt ban during a recent Year 9 assembly. He then received a number of alternative proposals, such as specifying how high above the knee skirts can be.

But the headteacher said monitoring the rules could be difficult.

And he added: 'A combination of current styles and a propensity for some girls to roll up their skirts has led to complaints from staff, other pupils and members of the public, regarding the decency of some skirts being worn.

'We have placed those with especially short skirts in detention and have written home to individual parents but sadly it seems that the message is not getting through to many girls.'

Mr Leigh thanked female pupils who were sensitive to the issue of skirt length.

But he added: 'As is often the case, those who meet the spirit of expectations suffer as a result of the unwillingness of some to conform.

Grandmother-of-two Julie Griffith, 49, who has a granddaughter at Sandbach High, said the move was old fashioned.
'I can understand the school wanting to do something about this as some of the girls' skirts are really short,' she said.

'But I think banning skirts altogether is a bit of a dramatic step. I know a lot of girls roll their skirts up to make them shorter. It's a fashion thing.'

The grandmother of another pupil Janet Smithey, 53, added: 'It's not fair on the girls who do wear their skirts at the right length, although I think my granddaughter would prefer to wear trousers anyway.'

One, 45, said: 'It is ridiculous. My daughter is a teenager who enjoys looking smart but also likes dressing as a girl - not a boy.

'She's never liked wearing trousers since she was little even in rough play so I can't imagine she'll like this.'

Non-denominational Sandbach High School has 1,396 pupils and a further 320 in their sixth form college.

The school website states: 'Sandbach High School and Sixth Form College Sports College enjoys a pleasant situation in the historic market town of Sandbach.

'As a community we work together to create a secure and friendly environment in which individuals can grow intellectually, emotionally and socially.

'We take pride in being a caring and well-ordered community where everyone is encouraged to develop self-awareness and personal responsibility and play a full part in the life of the school.

'Our Code of Conduct is based on respect, courtesy and consideration.'

Not just in Cheshire, but in other places as well. I've seen this myself, some of them are unbelievably short.

I agree, I don't find them to be attractive.
