A State Founded On Keeping Somalia "alive"

Beating the odds, and keeping the Somali spirit alive has been the objective of a state 12 years in progress. Puntland is a region in northeastern Somalia, centered on Garowe (Nugaal region), whose leaders declared it an autonomous state in 1998 after a decision made by local political and traditional leaders following several failed national reconciliation efforts in the wake of the Somali Civil War. Their efforts to quickly mobilize, and bring political, and military strength to a forsaken desert during times of war as well as political turmoil throughtout an entire nation is extraordinary. The million dollar question is, how did a region cut off politically and ecomically from the well devoloped prestigious Somali captial of Mogadishu gain strength, and political might? Even the second Somali captial of Hargeysa was not under their control nor influence, and actually far from the political realities of both these prominent Somali captials. The Mogadishu that once was home to Somalis of all tribal backgrounds, military strength, political figuares, national resources, and deveolpment became and continues to be a place where tribal warlords, and religious extremists who have lost sight of their Somalinimo fight out endless wars for total control. The second Somali captial Hargeysa has become the host city of perhaps the most short sighted tribal politicans Somalia has ever seen. At a crucial time like the beginning of the Somali civil war they were expected to rise to the occasion, and help reconstruct the political thinking of those fighting over Mogadishu, rather turned their backs and called for secessionism the second blow to Somali integrity.

After a few years passed, and what most Somalis and the world saw as political immaturity, and mistakes both taking place in Mogadishu and Hargeysa failing to correct itself and becoming Somalia's political realities, the need for a game changer was never so visable. A quiet revolution began to take shape in the form of a state in the Somali desert. This revolution would become a reasoning ground for the on going Somali crisis and put out of business the political logic of Mogadishu iyo Hargeysa tribal politicans. The revolution would be lead by a man who's name is known to many in the Somali Peninsula and beyond. That man was Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, born December 15, 1934 in Galkacyo, Somalia, who is a career politican genius, military strategists, visionary and war hero who was decorated for bravery in the Somali-Ethiopian wars of 1964 and 1977. His leadership and political revolution shock both Mogadishu and Hargeysa platforms and after shocks are reoccuring to this day.

With the reign of the resourceful Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, the Somali revolution came in the form of Puntland State of Somalia. A Somali state created to be a custodian of Somali honor, decency, dignity and integrity. With the clear and simple aim of seeking the unity of the Somali people and adheres to a federal system of government. Unlike the secessionist of Hargeysa Puntland is not trying to obtain international recognition as a separate nation. The State of Puntland is here to counter-balance the political immaturity of Hargeysa and Mogadishu destructive political stands and significantly change the political atmosphere of our shared nation by puting us back on the right track.

The revolution started 12 years is on going, many obstacles have been overcome, and the path has been paved. Mogadishu iyo Hargeysa are no longer blindly in the forefront. They no longer can be naive without facing real consequences, and pressure will only increase from this point on internally and externally. Today the revolution is stronger than ever, Puntland’s cities are booming, its people are more confident and united, its leaders have chosen wisdom over ignorance and greed. What other state or part of Somalia has risen so high for peace, has welcomed as many desperate folks, has held its leaders accountable, as the state of Puntland? Another new prominent Somali city has emerged from this revolution, that is ready to overtake both Mogadishu iyo Hargeysa. Yes indeed I speak of Bosaso, so beautiful and peaceful which today has become home for all the clans of Somalia.

The success of the revolution that has become Puntland, meant that its founder and champion became the President of the Federal republic and that Federalisam an idea coined in Puntland and championed by its people became the adopted power sharing structure for Somalia.
